nVidia in the tray...

I installed the newest nVidia drivers and now everytime i boot i have that damn nVidia icon in the tray. It tells me i have SLI disabled (duh), then it launches FF and sends me to SLI zone. It also has all the settings (as if i change my settings so frequently that i need something like this. Did nVidia do ANY usability research before implementing this?), control panel, etc. I have done all the necessary scans and there is no mention of it in startup. Any suggestions, this shite is like nagware or something.

There's your fix :)

That or get newer better drivers

Sweet, thanks wizboy. Im going to have to look into some of the other goodies over at tweaksrus. I get into this stuff when i build/bench a new rig, but not lately.

edit: i looked at the regedit and may only turn off the error to sli disabiling. Does it prevent the nVidia quick launch from loading in the tray?

Does it show up under msconfig?
You can get the tray program to stop running if you use that.

Hit the windows key + R at the same time, and type in "msconfig". Then when it pops up, go to the startup tab and look for anything that says Nvidia or NVsomething. Disable it.

Besides the SLI popup, the Nvida Tray Icon shouldn't be bothering you.

So why would you want to get rid of it?

That is what i meant by startup -> via msconfig in my OP. Its not in there--trust me.

Precisely why i want to get rid of it--it bothers me now that i know it was used as nagware/adware. Not to mention i dont like SW that i cant control. I dont need (and will NEVER use) that quick launch icon in the tray, therefore i want to remove it.

Very interesting...if I still had my 7600GT, I'd try installing that driver set and fiddling with it.

I NEVER bothers me. It's not spyware/adware/nagware. It was a simple registry problem that has been fixed with all drivers after the 91.31. And you have the registry fix. Just apply the reg fix and I assure you that it'll not bother you EVER again.

I don't use it either but it's nice to have it there.

It nags me about not having SLI and it takes me to a website (SLI zone) where i can buy an SLI machine, build my own, buy SLI-ready components, and/or join the SLI club. Yes, the regedit hack will takecare of this, but to me that is just like saying, "well that backdoor cant do anymore harm, but i will still just leave bits and pieces of it laying around and leave all other ports wide open." It bothered me ONCE, that is enough. Maybe i should see someone about some meds for OCD? ;)

You might want to do that and it only takes you to the site if you click on the message.
So just don't click on it.

You can disable the icon in the tray from the control panel itself, you don't need to edit the registry to do that. I don't like a tray full of stuff either, so I disable it. It will however, always come back everytime you upgrade your driver. You just have to disable it again.

I have been all over that control panel looking for a way to disable and nothing. Where in the control panel did you find the place to disable it?

BTW, im assuming youre talking about the nVidia control panel rather than the windows control panel.

In the new NVIDIA control panel: View > Show Notification Tray Icon
In the old NVIDIA contol panel: Tools > Enable Taskbar Icon

Already unchecked. Still get the damn thing.

Odd, I installed the newest WHQL driver on my wife's rig (still has my BFG FX5900 in it), and it worked fine after a reboot. I've noticed that the new CP doesn't seem to like it when you bounce back and forth between the new and old style CP's. It seems to re-enable the tray icon when I do that. If I stick with one CP, it works fine. After getting used to the new CP messing around with my GX2, I kind of like the new one so I use that one. I never had any icon or pop-up issues with the GX2 and the 90's drivers, although it's an "SLI" card so it wouldn't warn me about not running SLI.

Then do the reg edit or try different drivers.
