The irony is that ATI are likely to do something very similar with their PRO, XT and XT PE variants of whatever product R520 will end up powering. My money is on X900.

Still nothing but speculation.. I am excited for the new cards though.. Even though the 6800/x800 series is fast, I want almost double the power!!!
Come on nVidia/ATI!!

"X900" What are these people talking about. Just because ATi has run out of numbers does not mean that they will continue the x series. It's called the r520, while the x series are all r4xx chips. Stupid reviewers! The ultra thing is likely though.

R520 is the codename for the chip. It is highly unlikely that the product will be released under that name. X900 seems far more likely
So, what do you think? "Y800" or "XI800"? X900 does sound better, but they would run into a problem with their mid-range chips if they stuck with the X series. Maybe it's time to drop the whole "RADEON" bit and go with a new name, once you hit 10, your model numbering scheme is usually dead.Originally posted by: Cheesetogo

No, I was saying that since its of a whole new sreies, the r5xx, that it would not make sense for it's real name to be of the x series, as that series is all r4xx chips. The r5xx is a whole new series, and will probobaly not be of the x series.

IT MIGHT be the only chip capable of doing H.264 video in hardware for a while, as we believe that not even Nvidia G70 will be able to do this. H.264 is next generation codec used for HD-DVD content. Despite that we heard more than once that R520 aka Fudo is the biggest chip ever built.
R520 was showed in Taiwan and it's up and running, showcasing two games, PREY and Alan Wake at ATI booth and doing some H.264 video decoding at a different corner.
We learned that R520 might be quite hot as it is the biggest chip ever with its 300+ millions transistors. Since its 90 nanometre its kind of logical that you can place quite a lot of pipelines under its hood and it turns out that ATI has managed to pack in 32 pipes. Having 32 happy Scottish chaps in kilts playing the pipes at the same time is perhaps the best metaphor.
We wrote about this before but I don?t think ATI will decide about final pipe number until it seas Nvidia's G70, Geforce 7800GTX in action. ATI will have to choose between 24 pipeline part of the nasty decision of having all 32 pipes working at once. If R520 manages to defeat G70 ATI will stick to 24 pipes story and all will be happy in Toronto and ATI's part of Santa Clara. If G70 scores better then ATI will have to enable all 32 pipes. The real problem is that at 32 pipelines yields are not that good as we are talking about very complex chip.
Whatever Nvidia do ATI have reasonable chances this time around. We even heard from Hexus that Nvidia might have some G70 Ultra card in its pocket saving it for rainy days.
We learned that Taiwanese based companies are going to pay no more and no less than $357 for the cards.
No, you're right. Rys was more than likely betting on the retail name, not the benchmark winnar.Originally posted by: rgreen83
I could be wrong, but i took it he was just saying his money was on that the name would be x900, i didnt take it he meant it would be faster.Originally posted by: RichUK

I find it more likely that ATI will simply produce all cores as 32 pipeline variations then bin them. The good cores keep all 32 pipes activated while the defective ones get 8 pipes shut down and it's retested as a 24 pipe core, possibly all the way down to 16 pipes. That would greatly minimize losses due to manufacturing defects.
They did it with the 9500/9700 and again with the X800 Pro/X800XT so I don't see them stopping this trend anytime soon.
Looks like RivaTuner and its softmod utility is going to need a new revision pretty soon.![]()
