nVidia hates me or something

I was sitting here happily playing CS:S before I have to go to work at 5pm AZ time, when I smell something like burning plastic. I think nothing of it for half an hour, then when it still persists, I turn off my computers and investigate the rest of the house. Nothing was left on a burner in the kitchen, so I crack open both cases and check the power supply connections.

I had a power supply go bad on me in the past, and it made a similar smell, and fused the connection to the mother board. So I checked them, but they were both fine.

Then I got a little curious, and booted both machines to make sure all the fans were working. My secondary was fine, there are only 2 important fans in there anyway(CPU and PSU) and all of them were working.

My main machine however, didn't pass that test so well. My Gainward GeForce 4 Ti 4800 SE's fan wasn't spinning up. That explains the bad smell while playing CS. So $20 and 30 minutes later, I return from my local Fry's Electronics with a replacement HSF combo. I apply some Artic Silver to the GPU and pop the heat sink on, except the power connecters don't mach.

The card has a 2 pin connector (which didn't want to let go of the old one) and the new fan has a 3 pin connector. At this point I'm very unhappy with it, so I void both warrenties and make the 3 pin fit on the 2 pin connnector(red and black). I pop the card back in the case and she fires up and spins up. Hooray!

I go to start my IM and net surfing secondary computer back up, but get a 3 beep code. No video. Reseating the card didn't solve it. It's a GeForce 2 MX 400, no active cooling, just a passive cooler on the GPU.

So yeah, at the moment, I'm not very happy with nVidia. As that is my second dead GeForce 4 Ti 4600. The 4800 is just the 8x AGP version of the 4600, I previously had the same thing happen to me with a BFG 4600, except they epoxied the HSF to the GPU so I couldn't replace it, and the warrenty had already expired.

I've currently had 2 dead 4600s, my first dead GeForce 2, and 2 dead 6800GTs. Wonderful company, why do I keep buying your products?

I know the feeling, although not as bad as you. I just bought a dead AGP 6600GT, and wasted 4 days testing it to make sure that it was in fact defective.

My MSI ti4200 is still running strong, though.

have you checked your power units guys?or even the quality of the electricity u get in your region or even more in your own home?i had problems with hdd's failing until i installed a ups.its just not possible for good companies to ship so many defective products.
if u have done all the above i dont know what to say.

Well, in this case it is more the fault of the company who built the card itself.

Did you make sure the new fan was blowing inwards, towards the heatsink?

Maybe the distance to the chip was too much?

What a helpful reply. 😕

Make sure the polarity of the new HSF is correct.

Also, you might want to test your PSU's with a multimeter.

The PSU is an Aspire 500watt unit. I don't think it's that that had fried the fan, or is making the 6800s not work, because I've tested them in both of my computers.

I had my old 4600 die on me using a different mother board and an Antec 350watt PSU, which was over at my mom's appartment when it bit the dust, but spent most of it's time here with me at home. That happened more than a year ago. I think it's just a defect in the fans for the GPU.

The new HSF is working well for me, and my other computer decided it liked working after all after I rebooted it a few times. Came home powered it on, no beep code, Windows loading screen, no desktop. Reboot, beep code, power it off. Boot again catch the end of the POST, and got the loading screen, voila, I see desktop. I never though seeing Barney would feel so good(have a HL2 desktop). I think the GeForce 2 is giving up the gohst after years of faithful service. It's a good 6 or more years old. Passive cooling, so that's not the culprit.

In any case, I'm going to be shipping my 6800 back to Leadtek on monday, and pray for the best. Hopefully I won't get ANOTHER dead one. Though the chances are high that I will because they, like most companies, send out refub units to fullfil RMAs.

BFG has a lifetime warranty, hard for that to expire.

Ok, I was an idiot back then and didn't know about BFGs lifetime warrenty. I started pulling off peices of the heatsink to try and get it off. 🙂

At least I didn't try to RMA it afterwards.

I'm going to enclose a note to Leadtek asking for a NEW card, not a refurbed one, but hard telling if it will actually happen. I haven't been able to get on the phone with someone at the CA location, only email contact.

If BFG folds up like a tent, everyone's warranty will expire. Then the pwner can just start up a new company and say "ha ha ha I laugh at you!". 😛

That's if they do go belly up, but they haven't so the OP ruined the warranty on his card.
