Retail availability is set to occur on May 27th this coming Friday but several e-tailers started their first round of pre-orders today. Despite only popping up for a few minutes, Amazon, Newegg and Best Buy all sold out of their pre-orders within minutes. This went for all brands like MSI, ASUS, EVGA, Gigabyte, Zotac and PNY. I guess when they are all reference model Founders Edition, it doesn’t matter too much which card you buy.

I seriously wonder why so many people are going for the FEs. Is it just a matter of having no patience at all? The AIBs are going to be so much better.

Perhaps there is strong demand for the first consumer 16nm FinFET GPUs?

Personally I'd still take limited availability at launch over zero products, slides and closed door demos.

Its not launched yet. I doubt even 10% of retailers got it listed yet. And there is certainly more stock to find.

But this thread isn't about that is it...

Amazing how NVIDIA can't win here. If demand outstrips supply, it's a "paper launch." If availability were robust, I am sure those same people would claim that demand isn't there.

Anyway, it's going to be a fight to get the 2 1080s that I'm going to order on launch day, but I'm ready.

I think the most amazing thing is that people are willing to accept a version of the card that will be way less than optimal at a premium price. It's like people enjoy paying more for less. amazing...

I have to agree with this.

Was there any doubt that the 1080 would sell out on the 27th? The only disappointing thing so far is the lack of non-FE cards, although I wasn't hopeful.

AFAIK only Amazon actually started selling pre orders and it may have been a mistake, seems they jumped the gun when neither Newegg or Best Buy have started taking orders yet.

So too soon to say the FE is selling out.

I hope we see the aftermarket cards soon. I won't be getting one, too impatient, but I look forward to seeing what the AIBs make.

Your right their may be some unhappy customers if Amazon can't supply all of their preorders although they must have the largest supply chain of anyone so I suspect they will get the largest amount.

Having worked in the technology industry I learned never to buy the first products on the market I can easily wait another week or three for the AIB cards to hit. Also better to wait and see what AMD Polaris 10 can do.

Pre order, if you can't scalp it return it.

free money guys.

Yeah, I think I might do that. It shouldn't be too hard to sell, right? I'm sure there are plenty of impatient people out there. Heck, a few people on this forum might bite.

Just because it intrigues me - does anyone have any kind of figure as how unusually large NV's first month post launch typically is?

Some multiple of a normal months sales of course, but you do get the impression it could be a quite scary one :)

Not everyone keeps on top of the market or does much research before buying. Others have enough money where they don't really care as if something better becomes available in a few months, they can always get that.

If demand outstrips supply, it's a "paper launch."

If they came out with a press announcement talking about how they sold out a whole mess of cards, then it's hardly a paper launch, just high demand. Apple does this a lot where even though they're on backorder for two weeks, they'll tell you they've just sold however many hundreds of thousands or millions.

It's more likely that there aren't a whole mess of cards that were sold and my thinking is it will be a while before you don't have what supply there is vanishing almost immediately as seen here. Hence why people are calling it a paper launch. I don't really get why people are trying so to hard to deny it either. It's not like AMD is sitting around selling hundreds of thousands of their next generation cards while sipping scotch and using hundred dollar bills to light cigars while having interns fight in a giant money pit.

It's pre order. There is no supply. It is a paper launch.

I am locking this, since the entire thread is a flamefest. The cards are not even launched until the 27th, but the OP says "Paper" (as in paper launch), which is NOT (at least yet)
