Nvidia GT220 vs. ATI X1800XT

I have a new i7 machine coming in soon that I'll upgrade to an HD 58xx once the prices drop a bit.

In the meanwhile, it's coming with a 1 GB Nvidia GT220, which I figured I'd replace with a spare Radeon X1800XT 1 GB I have lying around, but now I'm not sure that'd actually be any faster. GT220 seems to be a 40nm DX10.1 part somewhere between a 9500GT and a 9600GSO (http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3657&p=1 ).

This won't be used for much gaming in the meantime (mostly just older games, HD video playback, and some video editing), so a low-end card's not a problem. That said, should I keep the GT220 or drop in the X1800XT instead?

The only remotely close comparison I could find between the two was some older x1900 L4D benches versus the newer GT220 benches, they were almost identical in framerate-

I know that is an absolutely terrible comparison, it's just hard to get benches directly showing parts that many generations apart.

It seems like they should be relatively close in framerate, given that and the superior feature set of the GT220 combined with lower power and noise, I would probably give the nod to the GT220 although I wouldn't expect much of a difference in performance one way or the other.

You could always bench them yourself and let us know how they stack up :)

Is the GT 220 the DDR2 or DDR3 version? If it is the DDR3 version, then for sure the GT 220. If DDR2, maybe a tossup. In any case, it should use less power in the meantime and produce less heat. Just overclock it and you're good to go until you upgrade it.

Well I have something for you: Run game benchmarks with both and post your results. I would be most interested in how they stack up in newer games.

The GT220 should be about equal, perhaps a bit faster depending on the game. And it will use A LOT less power. Just stick with the nVidia card for now :)
