nVidia GT 630 2GB DDR3 or Radeon HD 5450?

Hi folks,

I'm putting together a system for a family member, and I can't figure out which one of these two cards (both made by Gigabyte, both featuring DDR3) I should include... Which one would you think would provide the best bang for the buck?

The rest of the system features a Phenom X3 720 (unlocked to quad-core), with 8GB DDR3.

The 630 is a bigger card, and theoretically has more RAM... the 5450 is physically smaller.

Since I'm thinking the resulting system should be the best all-around machine (a little encoding, a little gaming, etc.), I tried to look the two cards online, but there are basically no professional reviews for the 630 - which, as per Engadget, is in fact a revamped GT 440.

The thing is... I already have both of these two cards on my spare parts shelf, and I'm not going to buy something else instead, so please don't recommend an alternative card.

Any ideas?

They both suck for running games. More ram means nothing on those cards as they don't have the power to use more than 512mb Vram.

Ah, folks, sorry for the confusion, I edited my first post accordingly...

I'm not looking to BUY something else instead... I already have these two cards, so the question is which one of them would "suck less" (LOL!)....

I can't speak for the 630, but 5450 is to be avoided for anything other than "office" use. It is not even adequate for the Internet unless one's visual tolerance is low.

I have a GT 620M in my laptop which is slightly slower than the GT 630. It actually doesn't do too bad with light gaming at 1440x900. I can play Rift at Low details with good FPS and it plays 3-4+ year old games very well. Of the 2 cards you have, the GT 630 sucks less.
