nVidia GPU Downscaling, does it really work?

Hello everyone! Well now that I've ordered in Amazon 2 Geforce GPUs to build a SLi Setup which both have a lot of VRAM (4GB each) i was looking around in forums and i found a tutorial in german (I didn't understand anything!! o_O) where the OP explains that you can use a larger resolution in games (even larger than the maximum capable in the monitor) and rescale it to the monitor's native resolution to use it as an anti-aliasing method to improve fidelity and sharpness in textures. The OP states that you can play in 2560x1600p resolution using a 1920x1080p monitor, that's the little i understood because by logic you can deduce that a higher resolution gives you better sharpness and that translates as less aliasing, i'm i correct?
Any one know how to do this ? Or is there a tutorial in English at least? Can this cause some king of damage to the GPU or Monitor? Does it really makes a difference ? Thanks guys.
