I'm thinking about a new laptop to replace/supplement my existing PC. The laptop has the Nvidia GeForce Go 7400, whereas my desktop system has the ATI Radeon 9500.

It might be an apples to oranges comparison, but I am wondering how one compares to the other in terms of performance.

I'm not much of a gamer, but I will occasionaly play AoE3, Fable, or the like.

Any opinions?

7400 but both suck for gaming ;(

You will have no problem with fable and most games but with Oblivion and AEO 3 you may have frame rate issue.

Excellent, thank you. I already have frame rate issues with the Rise of Nations demo so I know what I have no longer cuts it. I just want to make sure I am not takign a step backwards.

For a straight, two-up comparison of two cards' raw specifications, you can't beat this:

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=26&card2=408

The initial review of the particular pair at hand makes it look like the Go 7400 is way out ahead of the 9500, and then you see twice as many texture units for the 9500, which somewhat evens things up - then the better onboard RAM for the 7400 also is favorable. You most certainly aren't going backwards.

Awesome site, thanks. And thank you for the analysis as well.

You're welcome, of course. The first time I visited that site, I kept making pair matches the entire morning (can't recall if it was before or after I ended up being retired, so it could've been a Saturday). I was fascinated. But that kind of comparison works best within families, to see "how much better" an XT is than the "plain" GPU of the same name, for instance.
