Go check out any of the GF FX previews lying around the web and you'll find out.

What are going to be the differences in the two?

9700
1. you can buy one right now.
2. Ati is working real hard on the drivers.
3. It kicks ass.

gefrorce fx
1. can't buy one.
2. Dont know if it is real.
3. Its the same card as the one that was surposed to come out last year.
4. and we are still waiting for developers to use the features found in the geforce 3, forget about the ones found in the geforce 4.

any other questions?

LOL! Quite a bit more than a little bit off topic! Funny nonetheless!

As for the question in the title:

the GeForce FX will be faster than the Radeon 9700 Pro, and has directx 9.0+ support (in layman's terms, it exceeds the directx specs across the board). It has an exotic stock cooling system and most of them likely will take up the AGP port plus the space over the first PCI slot. Also, it is still ~4 months away from launch, and DirectX 8.0/8.1 games are only coming out now (think 2-3 years for any really good DX9 game to come out; Doom 3 looks to be the most visually impressive DX 8 game and it's still a year away!). The GeforceFX is a very nice promise of a video card on paper, and will work out to be a very good card I'm sure.

If you want a card now, and are willing to pay a lot for a video card, I'd recommend the 9700. It's the fastest thing out right now, and the GeForce FX doesn't really add any new features for the moment (besides just being faster). Besides, by the time the GF FX does come out, there will probably be an ATI refresh part out by then, and will you want to get the GF FX, or the R350 in a couple of months after that...? There is always something better on the horizon, but when the difference isn't generational that's the best time to upgrade ( GF2 to GF3 was generational, for example; GF3 to 8500 or 9700 to GF FX are not).

The FX should be out in February, so it's about 2 months away. BTW, Doom 3 is OpenGL, not DirectX...

The FX will probably be faster because of its higher clock speed (all those DX9+ features or whatever PR thingy they're boasting won't be too useful in today's games), but considering its price, I don't know if it'll be fast enough to be worth it over a 9700 Pro. I'm certainly glad I got a 9700 Pro in September, rather than waiting ~6 months for a slightly faster card that'll cost more.

2. Dont know if it is real.

nVidia has officially confirmed and announced it, hence we DO know it's real and we know much of it's base architecture if not the specifics.

Yes, the GeForce FX is a real card operating at 500 MHz DDRII memory and a 500MHz core with 16.3GBs/second of bandwidth and 8 pixel pipelines but only 1 texture unit per pipeline as is the case with the ATI RADEON 9700 PRO. I know this as I watched the 1 1/2 hour GeForce FX launch earlier this month.:)

I'm 99.9% sure you're right, Doom 3 is OpenGL. My bad. Carmack loves OpenGL and so it makes perfect sense. It still does use vertex shadars I believe, and hence the T&L unit of modern graphics cards, however.
