I have purchased this videa card about 3 months ago. Today I decided to crack open the case, insert a new harddrive and clean up all the fans. I also kept it running before doing this as I opened to up to make sure all the fans are working properly and when I came to the video card...the fan was at a halt. I rebooted the system and looked at it. It was spinning at full speed on boot until the Windows XP splash screen came up while booting, then it was an instant halt. I figured maybe its just heat sensitive so I open up a game, with all settings at full and making it all really work hard for about 20 minutes i take a look at it, the fan is still not moving. I don't know if it just didn;t get hot enough or the fan is actually dying on me. I already took it out and cleaned it up (and it was barely dirty leaving me to the conclusion that its been barely running), put it back in and test fired it again. Same thing, worked until windows splash screen came up at boot. I play real hardcore games...this video card is ideal between price and power but at the rate I use it...if the fan is not functional, I can't believe its not a steaming pile of liquid goo.

Specs:
Stock Dell 8100 (except vid card)
Pentium 4 @1.7GHz
NVIDIA 53.03 drivers
Windows XP Home
512MB RAM

Thanks in advance for any responce.

is the power Y splitter plugged in ALL the way? I had fan noise problems with my card, opened the case, re-inserted the plug firmly, and the noises stopped. AMAZING! But if you are 100% positive its all plugged in and inserted all the way you would SERIOUSLY want to contact whoever provides your warranty.

Check the fan when you start up a game or 3D app. I'm almost positive that it's just shutting off because you're in 2D mode, but it kicks on in 3D mode.

Calling customer service seems to be the only logical course of action here. Even if the 5200U has a 2D mode, it still should be shutting its fan off, as a HSF isn't as efficient as a plain HS (with more surface area) at dissipating heat. It's possible the core is cool enough to not need active cooling, but I really doubt it.
