My graphics card is not working anymore and I would like to know what I can replace it with. I have 250watt psu and a nvidia geforce 8500 gt video card.

How much are you able to spend, and would you be willing to buy a new power supply if needed?

If I might ask, are you sure it's the video card (symptoms would help here)?

In device manager it says that there is trouble with it and its not working. Hardware diagnostics check said everything is ok apart from the nvidia card. I would probably upgrade the psu to 300 watts if needed. Not sure how much I plan on to spend yet. Depends on what I can replace it with.

Whenever I play any video the computer crashes with bsod and the resolution is only on 640×480. Wont let me change to recommended settings. I have a widescreen hd monitor.

How much do you want to spend? You could go with an Nvidia GTX 750Ti for $150 US. It'd get you some "modern" gaming capability. Also very low wattage.

OK, I'll admit to doing a good bit a guessing here at to what you are looking for , but I like the GTX 650 for its price, performance, and power usage.

When I looked this up, it was at $109:

You can find a nice graph on this page:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7764/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-750-ti-and-gtx-750-review-maxwell/22

and some benchmarks back a few pages:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7764/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-750-ti-and-gtx-750-review-maxwell/16

The 750ti is also an excellent card, For $40 more, you would get around 30% more performance (depending on the game) and roughly the same power draw.

If you want something better, you would probably need a beefier power supply.

Thanks ketchup79. Im not into playing games on it apart from facebook games so GTX 650 looks ok for me. Will check the 750ti out though if I dont need to upgrade the psu. Thanks for your help again. Im not much of a computer expert so your input has been of great help.

Thanks as well mistersprinkles. Might go with the nvidia Gtx 750Ti. Will it run ok on 250watt psu or should I upgrade it.

Since these cards are built on a smaller process, and from the graphs I have seen, it is a good bet this will actually consume less power than the 8500 did.

Great, I have a shop here in Townsville that sell this, ASUS GTX750TI-OC-2GD5 GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready Video Card, for $229 Australian. Will buy it and see how it goes. Will reply back how it goes.

Have a sister with an HP prebuilt that had an 8500gt in it. It failed a few years ago so I just tossed in a cheap 8400gs as it was just a general use home computer with no real need to display anything intensive. A 750Ti would be a great upgrade, I had no idea that could only run on a 250w PSU though. Might have to look into one to replace a card in a rig I have with a 350w PSU for shits and giggles.

750 Ti seems way overpowered for a Phenom at 2.2 ghz. I am also sure you could not overclock an OEM system and the psu would not be up to it anyway. I like the GT 650 recommendation, or maybe a HD7750. If you don't use the comp for gaming, something like the HD6450 or GT 630 would be fine.

I don't think it would be possible to buy a modern graphics card that is slower than your 8500GT. In other words, absolutely anything you buy will be both faster and more power efficient. I would get the cheapest card available, unless you want to play modern games.

So the 750Ti would not work unless I upgrade the psu. No not interested in playing modern games. Only games on facebook most likely. What does OEM system mean and overclocking.

OEM - original equipment manufacturer. In this case, probably refers to whoever built your PC.
Overclocking - running your components at settings greater than recommended in order for higher performance.

Just buy the cheapest card you can that will fit into your motherboard. You will be fine. A 750Ti would be like using a nuclear warhead to crack a nut.

Ok, thanks Ancalagon44. Was planning to get the 750ti but with your recommendation, I think it would have been a bad idea considering my computers about 6-7yrs old. Would the Gt 650 be ok.

Even a gt630 would be ok. If you don't game there is no point and anything would be an upgrade over the 8500gt. The one I had to replace in my sisters HP was the slower 256mb model too which is the version I am assuming you have.

Something like this would be more power than you would ever need.

Can someone tell me if an AMD Radeon 6760 card is any good if its 2yrs old. Have been offered one for $100. Is it better than the GT 650?

You mean a 6670? I have never heard of a 6760. Or a 6770?

In either case, $100 sounds like a lot for either card.

A GeForce GT 630 or a Radeon R5 230 would be fine for you. The card you mentioend - the 6670 or 6770 - would probably be faster, but I really do not think it is worth your while spending the extra money, unless you plan to play games on it. And if you do want to spend $100 on a video card, rather buy something more modern. $100 sounds like a lot of money for a 2-3 year old mid range video card.

Thanks Ancalagon44. Thats exactly what I thought as well. I would rather a brand new one that comes with warranty, than a card that doesn't. Just incase something goes wrong with it.
