Are you talking about the 512MB 7800GTX? If so, than it. If you're talking about the 256MB 7800GTX, then the X1800XT would be better, but I still like Nvidia :)

Given that x1800XT is only $40-50 more on pricewatch, it is a better card no doubt. Unless you play AOE3, Riddick and Black and White 2, ATI cards leads - Review

However:

1) 2x7800GTs are $100 more and offer a lot more performance (but only a good option if you already have SLi board and good PSU, otherwise the difference will be more than $100)

2) R580 should come out around January 24th. This either means you could pick it up for $499 or whatever the price is or buy a cheaper 7800GTX/X1800XT.

If you are going to spend $400+ on a videocard, I'd wait 3 more weeks to see what shapes up.

Hopefully this wont be a paper launch though.

Here's how I see it:

nVidia = smoother, yet 9/10 graphics
ATI= 10/10 Graphics, yet not as smooth

Any to little help?

It would be an easier choice if Nvidia was the IQ king too. I've switched to NVidia 3 times so far, and each time I swore I could see the 2D image quality differnce (and thought I could see it in 3D games too).

Still considering the same video cards you are, though.

I'd get the nVidia myself, not even a question. Better perfomance, linux drivers that dont suck and windows drivers that dont suck

Go with either card and be very, very happy ... well until February next year when it is antiquated.

nVidia all the way. X1800 performs good but there's just something "missing" ...it's big, loud, runs hot. Not to say nVidia's doesn't run hot and isn't loud, but it seems more mature and less shoved out the door.

I went with the X1800XT because I thought it was a better card than the 256mb version of the 7800GTX and because of the extra memory. I wasn't interested in SLI or Crossfire and both cards were roughly the same price prior to Christmas so it was a no brainer.

I would gone with the 512mb version of the 7800GTX, but that was drastically more expensive. Plus, I couldn't find any in stock to buy.

Bottomline is this: if cost is no concern, get the 512mb 7800GTX if you can find it. If the choice is only between the 256mb 7800GTX and 512mb X1800XT, I think the ATI is the better choice.

FYI, the fan is no where near as noisy as all the horror stories I've read. Just make sure your case has good ventilation. So long as the hot air can get out, it'll never have to spin at full speed (even under load).

X1800 XT is faster but it's also noisier. Whichever is more important to you will determine your choice.

I'd go with the X1800Xt but if you can find a 7800 GTX 256MB for cheaper go that route.
