I have "GHOSTING" of the screen, and "NON-RESPONDING" messages, and that pesky blue circle timer just spins round and round. It's happening to me even with a new Hard drive.
I could be offline, or online it doesn't matter.

I called Nvidia and they told me it might be a GPU issue. They sent me a driver which might correct this buggy issue, but it's still doing it. Then they sent a link to try the "Video Card Stability test", which I ran for 9 hours, and all I got was a benchmark of 95. No other info.

I also called MSI (mobo maker) and he's heard of MSI's GPU's mimicking the same issues. I know it's frustrating, but 'hang' in there.....no pun intended.) I posted more on my problem here.

I really had some doozies a few weeks ago and spent alot of time rebooting, "Bootmgr missing", etc, did a Western Digital Lifeguard Diagnostic and confirmed bad unrepairable sectors on my boot drive, so I replaced with new HD, and re-installed Windows, drivers, etc., and still doing the same thing.
When I first built this system, I installed WinXP (32) I bought my GPU, and that was about four+ years ago, it may be the problem, if not, then what? I switched over to Windows 7 (64) PRO about two years ago, I have updated all 64 bit updates on all software/hardware.
I use Photoshop CS5, but before I install the Pinnacle Studio 15 Ultimate again, I'd like to find the source of these issues.

It's very frustrating right in the middle of editing, it freezes.
I have also not reinstalled Firefox, which I prefer over IE, but that program, and the Adobe Flash player would freeze countless times over and over.

I know I should upgrade to the Intel Sandy i5. or i7, with new and improved 16-32GB DDR3 over my present 8GB DDR2, along with a new Mobo, and GPU. The Pinnacle Studio, and photoshop uses lots of memory. I want it to run smoothly.
Sooooo Ghosting and non responding.......what are the causes?
Care to share any ideas?

MSI told me. "If it works, don't flash it."
Flashing from 1.A0 to current version 1C0, will not fix my issues, only correct the 4GB memory issue. So No, I will not flash.

OK, I opened my tower and :
1) Visibly checked the motherboard for burn caps, etc.
2) Removed each of the 4- 2GB Mem sticks out the Dimm slots, and reseated them.
3) I removed the 8600GT PCi_e card and inspected all the caps, and the whole board for any browned-out areas, but all looks good.
I referred back to my MSI Mainboard Specs, and it told me this:
PCi_Express Bus Spec. V.1.0a, supports crossfire.
PCi_Ex16
PCi_EGen 1x16, 1x4.
When looking for a a new GPU, if I'm not a GAMER, OVER-CLOCKER, and only want to occasionally watch a DVD, Work with Photoshop CS5, and also do the Capture, editing, and making movies with the PINNACLE STUDIO 17 ULTIMATE, which card would be suited for me? The EVGA GEFORCE, GTS/GT, or the GTX series?
My 8600GT was purchased on Dec. 26, 2011, at FRY'S Electronics, Anaheim, Ca.

It only has 256MB memory, GDDR3
32 Stream Process,
540 Core clock Mem,
1180 Shader Clock,
700 memory clock,
8.6 Texture rate,
Mem. Interface 128 BIT
Mem. Bandwifth 22.4

When I rebuild this computer, (I can not afford it now) If I have to replace this 8600GT for failure, to get productive again, without all these issues, what would be a "smart" GPU that will work on this MSI Socket 775 MoBo platform, and the future MoBo platform, maybe a Socket 2011,(Intel i7) or Socket 1155 (i5, or i7)??

I'm not clear on versions of the PCi_E slots on my Mainboard, and which GPU's will be compatible.
Thank you!

What's my issue?
Well Man,.......for starters, I'm trying to figure out what's causing my "Ghosting", "Not Responding", and the continuous timer spinning. Many views are coming in that it could be my power supply, my 8600GT, or MSI motherboard. ( All about 5 years old) I've checked both the motherboard and the GPU and did not see any bad caps, or anything suspicious.

Nvidia told me the Quadro 600 ($150.00) would be good. (Like you said) That Photoshop and Pinnacle Studio reccommend the Quadro cards, since they are supposed to be higher ended that the basic cards. I don't know what to look for in a card compared to my 8600GT. I also don't know if waiting to rebuild my newer system is a better idea, than to plop down $$$ now, only to have to upgrade the GPU at that time. When I build a system, I usually keep the card in until I upgrade the Moboboard, CPU, and maybe the PSU, if needed.

Some other cards Nvidia told me about was :
Geforce 560 Ti,
GeForce GT550Ti,
GeForce GT640,
GeForce GT440,or the
GeForce GT 630.

I don't know what I'm looking for in a card. So Many choices!

I am not a gamer, or have I ever overclocked. Just looking for card that can keep up with photshop and Pinnacle Studio15 video editing. If I buy a new card today to use with my present system, I want to be able to use same card in the newer board, instead of wasting more money replacing it. These are my many issues. Thx!

Quadro cards perform way better in professional apps compared to their consumer counterparts.NV writes drivers specifically suited for Quadro.Something like this will be fine for your needs
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133354
And rest easy this will work fine in your new build as well(this is a low profile card so make sure you have good airflow)

Thanks.
Now is there much difference between the PNY (Nvidia) and the EVGA NVidia Quadro other than the low profile?

Does it matter if it's a 1GB DDR3 and not a 2TB GDDR5?

Another thing I've noticed, is that the Inputs for the Monitor on this card does not look like a regular Montior VGA, looks like I would need something else to connect.

I just bought the 8600GT, because it was on sale ($100.00 five years ago) and I did not know I was getting into Video Editing or photshop at that time, so I believed to be buying economical, and not out to be a double-carded SLI gamer dude, which I am not.

Brand wise no but GDDR5 cards are more expensive and quite faster overall. There are quite a few GDDR5 Quadro's available but they are 400$ upwards like this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133382
If you believe you need the faster memory interface for your projects go for it otherwise the cheap solution will do fine.

yeah, I saw that QuadroVCQ2000 on Amazon, and thought it would work far better on a newer board with an i7.....but for now, have to maybe settle for nthe 600. Hope I'm not sorry.

So these cards have DVI to VGA adaptor that come with. good.

About this Q600 Pci-Ex 16 2.0, Would I have to find a Mobo board LGA1155 or 2011 Board with backwards compatible graphic bus PCI-E 16 x 3.0, or PCI-E 16 x 2.0. Or am I getting the USB 3.0 mixed up with the Graphic Bus, and it's all a non-issue??

For the heck of it, lets use this as an example as a new board:
MSI Computer Corp. DDR3 1600 Intel LGA 1155
Z77A-643 Military class III Motherboard
Slots: 1x PCI-Express 3.0 x16 Slot; 1x PCI-Express 2.0 x16 Slot (runs at x4); 2x PCI- Express 2.0 x1 Slots; 3 x PCI slots

My present board has these, and I don't see any 3.0x 16 PCI-E :
PCI-Ex16 2
PCI-E Gen Gen1 (1x16, 1x4)
PCI-Ex4 N/A
PCI-Ex1 2
PCI 2
