hey hey!
From some roadmaps, and some googleing, it looks like the G80 will be grabbable late Q2 or early Q3. So im thinking June-July-August.

Since I will be building a new rig in August (yea i know its far, but i like to plan ahead) I wanted to see if any of you guys had more detailed info on the G80 (performance wise, and release date wise). I know most will be speculation at this point, but its better then nothing.

Should I hope for the G80, or do you guys think it will come out much later (ex. December 2006, to compete agains the R600 in the dx10 battle). It seems so out of proportion to me, for nVidia to release a new generation of cards just 3 months after the G71, and almost 6 months before ATI's counterpart. What do you guys think I should plan to put in my rig?

cheers

I wouldn't expect a G80 until later in the year. G71 should do just fine for now.

I seriously doubt we'll see the g80 released around june/july. The g71 is scheduled for february/march, and having 3-month product cycles is just not practical. I'm thinking the g80 will be released in the fall, like september/october timeframe, but why settle for a g80 - I heard the g81 refresh will be released around february next year, and you might wanna wait for that? ;)

If we all waited for the next great PC hardware release, no one would have any components.

Buy now, sell later and purchase again.

GT SLI is more than enough to hold me over to G80 *crosses fingers*

Chalk up another G80 vote.

I never really bought into the "refresh" thing. Give me something new and exciting, a la, unified architecture!

G80 will have 48 pipes. ATI won't have to add as many pipes as NVidia with their 3 shader per pipe ratio.

The ideal release date for the G80 (and R600) would be 2-3 weeks prior to the release of Windows Vista. So look for a late Q3 release since Windows Vista looks like it'll be a Q4 release.

I keep saying this, but there is really no reason to wait for the R600 or G80. This is because current plans don't call for DX10 to be supported on Windows XP. Not only that but games using DX10 will likely not be available for another two years or so at the earliest. And with the change in cores required to be DX10 compliant (unified shaders), it's questionable whether they would put as much effort into improving DX9 and down performance.

My personal speculation is that we'll see relatively minor improvements performance wise for DX9 games in the R600 and G80. Not enough to hold off on a video card purchase if you were already planning on upgrading in the next two months. The real performance gains will be with the G81 and R620 as they optimize and tweak the cores.

Actually its rumoured to be NVs first unified architecture. It will have GDDR4, S.M 4.0, Most defitnitely improved AA/AF, HDR plus AA, Most possibly (could be wrong here) have pure video2, SLI2. Based on 90nm lowk, it could be clocked pretty high.

Secondly, im not so sure to quickly judge ATis method (3 shaders per pipe) to Nvs method (more Pipes really). G71 vs R580 will show us which method is better for sure unless they perform the same.

The G80 will have monstrous performance, and likely a monstrous price tag. And it will be release in time for the xmas time feeding frenzy.

Buy when you're ready to buy, and look for the best bang/buck available then. It's impossible to upgrade for future games.

I really dont have a budget problem guys, and i know new stuff comes out all the time,

but I am buying my computer in August, and I dont want a month later to see DX10 cards

that have 1GB of vram, and killer benches. Definetely what Wicked said about buying

and selling stands true, but I would like to enjoy my SLI cards for at least a year before

having to upgrade them.

I am not planning to get Vista until mid 2007, so until then I really dont need DX10. But

I would sure like to be ahead of the game, and not having to invest in DX10 cards once I

decide to get Vista.

Keep the opnions coming!
