1) when you play a dvd using media player, you'll see an icon in the system tray (near the clock).. right click for properties.
2) its useful for players like media player, zoom player that lets u choose the video decoder.
3) see 1. You can also use media player's tool-options-dvd-advanced

Is the NVIDIA decoder compatible withthe ATI Radeon products? That decoder will not work with my setup. The little NVDIA icon appears in the task bar for a second or too as media player (or zoom) tries to get it up and running, then it disappears and an alternative mpeg decoder is selected. For whatever reason it wont' run.

It does, and in fact it supports DXVA hardware decoding with Radeon Products. I use the NV DVD decoders on my MCE rig (excellent) and my AIW9700pro and 6800standard have nearly identical CPU load with and without hardware acceleration. ( I mean that both cards show similar decrease in CPU load using hardware acceleration)

I'm nearly convinced at this point that the PVP on the 6800 is not doing any hardware MPEG decoding (DXVA is supported on any dx9 class hardware with driver support using the shader pipeline), and the only features supported over my AIW are VMR scaling in MCE , and Nvidias post processing (de-interlacing, 3:2 pulldown correction)

The 6800 has an advantage in PQ by a small, but noticable magin. Both are excellent/
