Nvidia drivers problem

I have an HP DV9700 laptop computer with an Nvidia 8600M card. Everything was fine until today when the computer warned me this morning that something was wrong with my nvidia card. I ignored the problem. It was only after I restarted my computer that the problem showed itself. Nothing was wrong until then. Now, when the drivers are installed, the screen goes black after I see the "windows" screen with the different orbs flying (this is W7 Pro 64). When I uninstall the drivers, the laptop screen is fine at 800X600. Anything higher and I have neat rows of yellowish lines. I haven't installed anything on this computer recently.
