Nvidia Driver Woes

So I just "upgraded" to a gtx560 using 285.62.

BF3 Single player crashes at the same point (1st level), less than 1 minute into the game.

I have 2 issues with Rage: 1. The texture popping this (is there a fix for this yet? I know this is an ID issue, not NV) and 2. Even more annoying than the textures (if that's possible), my my screen doesn't looked synched. It's hard to described but there it looks like the top third, the middle, and the lower portion of the screen are operating at different frequencies.

Is this a factory overclocked 560 ? The BF3 forums are full of people having crashes using GTX 560s. One of the solutions a lot of people found was they had factory OCed 560s and either reducing the card's speed to stock or for some, upping the voltage fixed it.

BF3 is amazing at finding instabilities in your system. When I was setting my CPU overclock I was passing linx and prime but hard-locking in BF3, I needed more voltage. I then started getting more crashes and had to reduce the overclock on my 480s, that may be degradation on those though.

If your card is not stock, try putting it to stock speeds.

Maybe i am blessed but i gamed for hours on end yesterday almost all day and not a single crash nothing but silky smooth high 1080p gameplay in both BC2 and BF3.

Running the latest beta on a gtx560ti and a i3 2100 neither overclocked at 1080p.

NO OC. The browser pop up says Game disconnected: something went wrong. (very helpful)

rage is pretty annoying to play if you are expecting a smooth experience.

Vsync is broken. It works but there is massive amouts of hitching if you turn it on. If you turn it off it smooths out a lot but then you have to deal with massive amouts of screen tearing. The tearing isn't too bad on my 120hz monitor but on my G71 there is a ton.

Secondly, the texture popping. It is there and it is there to stay.

With all that on the table. I'm actually enjoying it.

Mine always crashes on first load and works fine after that. I believe it's a game bug and not necessarily purely a driver issue. I using a 570 GTX

regarding your Rage problem, not sure if it's the card or what, but it is finally running fine on my 1x gtx580 now. i had texture pop and blue texture probs, but now fixed.

win7 x64, nv driver 285.62
i7-920 back to stock
16 GB ram

I used these two links:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2156408
http://forums.steamgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2157618&page=2

in the 1st link, i just used the configs for the appropriate vram amount of your card.
in the 2nd link, just used the AF tweak.

In the nv control panel, mostly "application controlled," especially AA, and set AF to off. max whatever else you can.
In Rage, AA 4x, vsync on, texture cache large, gpu transcode enabled.

285 series is old by a couple months i think.

290s are on nvidia site. They are the ones that fix BF3 problems and others.

Thanks. I'll play with the AF settings. The .cfg have nearly eliminated the texture issue but for the initial stage load.

Nvidia has released several new drivers since then that have improvements specifically for BF3. Take other people's advice and update to the latest available drivers. Chances are, that is the majority of your issues.

trying right now.

EDIT: Same crash, same spot.

Sounds like a problem with your BF3 install. I am pretty sure you can try repairing with Origin, or just reinstall the whole game. Does it crash on multiplayer?

Try not overclocking anything if your issues go away leave it alone or find some proper stable overclock and go from there.

Here are some tips for Rage since I just recently finished it and also had a lot of complaints off the bat:

1) don't use a lot of those crazy custom configs. For starters, a lot of what they were addressing has now been implemented (to an extent) in the Rage setup options. So, coming from someone who read lots of posts and used lots of config tweaks, in the end my config file only had 5 lines.

2) Since you probably got 1GB of VRAM you can use the high option in the settings. I have a 2GB 5870 so I used the 16K custom option (in game options, low == 4k, high == 8k).

3) turn of Smart V-synch. I believe that is what is causing your odd tearing issue (horizontal tearing.) Use regular V-synch (options are On/Off/Smart). With just plain On, I didn't get the dreaded drop to 30FPS issue, and I stayed in the 50+ FPS range with no tearing.

4) Create the cache files in your appdata folder:
One good idea if you have the RAM space:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2157898

Basic point is create a folder called Rage @:
C: \Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Local\id Software\

I found this almost removed that initial texture load in stream. Using the 16k profile, I would load my save file and basically start playing with no texture loading (occassionally I'd see the textures applying, but it would be less than a half second if I were to guess how long it took.)

GL!

Now that I am home, I can reaffirm that there is a repair option in Origin. Just right-click on the game, and you'll see it. Not sure if it'll help, but worth a shot.

Didn't you hear? Constant crashing and texture corruption is a part of BF3's main selling points.
