I ran across this news about what kind of laptop NIVIDIA has chosen to replace those laptop affect by bumbgate and cannot be fixed.

http://www.pointoflaw.com/archives/2011/03/the-nvidia-clas.php

Maybe it's just me, but this seem a bit unfair or even unethical decision by NVIDIA.

I believe here's the specs for the replacement laptop:

•AMD V-Series processor V140, 2GB DDR3 memory, 250GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 rpm)
•ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 graphics, 15.6" LED high-definition display
•3 high-speed USB 2.0 ports, Built-in high-speed wireless LAN (802.11b/g/n), Built-in 10/100Base-T Ethernet LAN with RJ-45 connector
•6-cell lithium-ion battery,up to 4 hours and 15 minutes to give you more time away from an outlet.
•Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit operating system preinstalled

2.3 GHz SINGLE core to replace C2Ds?
40 SP GPU to replace 8600M GTs and faster 8 series?

I would like some of the crack Nvidia is smoking.

Almost makes you feel bad for those guys that bought expensive laptops with nvidia cards in them, that got killed from it.

I agree that AMD laptop is a POS, I bought one for my mother, its slower than the celeron 900 / Intel HD 4500 barebone laptops by a large amount.

holy crap! wtf is the point of even getting it then? most people that got high end laptops got them for a reason, which that piece of junk can't fulfill. i'm sure they've long replaced it too. talk about a slap on the peepee.

WTF my 8600M asus laptop replaced with this garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!!(I just hope my laptop don't go crap on me AGAIN)

but its kine of irony, i mean they replaced their own product with their own competitor.

thank GOD Nvdia losing market share.

btw is there a different between nvdia MXM board and AMD ? because if my laptop die again for th third times maybe I will just buy another MXM module. I just hope i can keep my laptop so I can sell that crap

I find this claim incredulous. There's a small marginal difference in the processors as revealed by these benchmarks:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html

"The performance should be on a level with a 2.2 GHz Celeron single core processor."

The Radeon HD 4270 is vastly superior, relatively speaking, to the Intel HD 4500 graphics.

Under the same situations these laptops with these components should perform pretty much the same (disregarding 3D graphics applications). Hard drive speed and bloated software will make a bigger difference in the overall end-speed than the real performance difference of the V140 against the 900.

So "by a large amount"? Perhaps if you consider a 7% difference a large amount, but I wouldn't, no one here would, and I'd wager you wouldn't either.

What about the Mac owners? Do they also get this? If so, that would be one of the slickest wamboozles I've read about. Either the judge was in nVidia's favor, they do not know about technology, or they just don't care.

Macs were repaired.

Macs were repaired.

They were replaced with the same chipset. My lab mate/friend has nothing but problems with 9400m in his Late 2008 Macbook.. Apple replaced it 5 times in 2.5 years and his system is still not stable. :\

Kind of funny that they are replacing the faulty Nvidia based graphics systems with Radeons. But, man, would I feel burned if my pricey GeForece 8800 or whatever melted down and this was all I got. Or I guess people could always 'bake' their laptops. :\

hehe!

Nvidia, "baking laptop and desktop graphics since 2006"

Im waiting for my laptop, which im writing this on, to fail because of the 8600m card in it... ive stopped playing games on it to try and minimize the heat output.. sad

According to nvidia, that POS is comparable to all the middle-high end notebooks which included nvidia mobile GPUs.

Lets face it not all the bumpgate laptops were , mid/high end.
And whoever is handling the warranty claim payouts from the successful lawsuit are the ones who chose the replacement laptop.
Its not exactly like Jen-Hsun gets to choose.

If they chose something more expensive, they run out of money, then some would get nothing.

edit: The reason, I have both celeron and the single core low end AMD laptop, is because I bought a $2000 Sony laptop in 2005 , with a ATI discrete card. The laptop is a brick, the video card went faulty, I would say from over-heating. Never spend that much again for a laptop. Sony VGN-A250, I would love to get a replacement for this.

What I find more surprising is that they would replace all those Nvidia laptops with AMD/ATI laptops. Dubbya Tee Eff?

To everything else: Has no one here seen or participated in a class action lawsuit before? Lawyers get 50%, everyone else gets a coupon. Not that it'll matter anymore, SCOTUS decided class actions are illegal if companies put an arbitration clause in their contracts (which are almost always in contracts, and which always heavily favor the companies). What contract have you ever signed that didn't include "All disagreements handled by arbiter of company's choice?"

When does a consumer ever sign a contract with a clause like that?

well looks like nv finally is gesturing that they were wrong about bumpgate.

pretty shitty laptop though. its like thanks for buying a faulty 1500-2000 laptop. heres a 300 dollar, walmart special, piece of shit replacement, to replace that piece of shit we sold you a few years ago, so we can escape legal liability.

you know they wouldnt be doing this if they werent legally obligated/forced to/heavy advice from lawyer

But that wasn't the case here. They had estimated the Class to be close to a million I believe, but only ~27,000 people signed up. Plus, the Lawyers were able to get the judge in the case to approve their fee of ~13 million dollars before anything was decided. So, whether the lawyers did a great job, or a crappy job, they were getting paid.

Are all class action lawsuits this sloppy and poorly managed?

Yeah, gesturing with a middle finger.

This would be a reason why I am not an Nvidia fan, but in this particular instance, maybe it's not entirely Nvidia's fault such as poor replacement was chosen. I mean, there's a judge, lawyers..

On second thought, if Nvidia would have just "owned up" to the bad bumps 2-3 years ago, this would have never happened. So scratch that --- This is all Nvidia's fault.

Replacing 1500$ laptops with 300$ laptops sucks, and lol to saying AMD makes crappy laptops, they could have replaced this with an atom...

Giving people in 2011 a single core CPU - well I assume they could just send out Fuck you cards instead - so it could be worse.. somehow

I don't think a "F*^$ you" card would quite be on the same level as giving out a POS single core laptop, maybe if Jen-hsun personally delivered the card and spat in your face when you opened the door? Yeah, that might be worse...

Wait a second. Not only is Nvidia replacing defective laptops with much lower priced units, but units that are not even powered by their own graphics processors? Unreal. Just when you think Nvidia can't sink any lower.
