Nvidia cards owners : are you going for an ATI card ?

Hey all,
I currently have a GEForce 5900 Ultra. It works really well for everything we can get today as games. But im already thinking about selling it and buy a R9800 Pro or a R9800XT.
Half-Life 2 was going to be the "benchmark" that would decides me to go to ATI. But now it's delayed, I need to find another comparaison game. I probably think it will be Max Payne 2, if it runs badly on nvidia cards, im definatly going for ATI.
Main question is, get a 9800Pro cheap and wait for next gen or directly go for a 9800XT ? I think it will be hard to decide.
This isnt a thread for fanboys, it is just to get the feeling of nvidia owners and to help me decide whatever I should do.

Thanks.

If you`ve a FX 5900 Ultra at the moment then I would personally wait,I consider myself both an ATI and Nvidia owner being I own both brands.

Remember faster cards are down the road and you`ve said it runs all your games just fine at the moment,so waiting awhile is the wise cause of action IMHO.

Do not bother. All your doing is sidestepping. Even though ATI has better "max framerate" the minimum framerates on both 5900U and 9800XT/pro are too low to enjoy the game. You will spend most of the game hovering around 30fps to 40 fps with minimal action. As soon as the action starts heating up, the framerates will drop. You are much better off to wait for the nextgen cards: NV40 or R380/400 whatever they are going to call it.
I have a 5900 non ultra. I really like the card. But I would not dream of switching cards at this time. Everyone in this forum is saying that it is very foolish to buy hardware today that claims to run tomorrows software. The same example applies to buying a 64 bit AMD cpu right now. Why would you? There is nothing that would utilize the 64 bit architecture. No software that is 64 bit. There will be tons eventually, and that would be the time to buy your 64 bit processor.

I am sure that most of the level headed members here will agree with what I have said here (give or take a few).

If you really really want the ATI 9800pro/XT, we cant stop you from scratching that itch. Of course its your call.

IMHO

I wont buy a new card until games that are running terribly on nvidia hardware are out.
But it might be in the near future so just asking =)

No way... Ditch that Nvidia piece of garbage and get an ATI card. ATI ROCKS!!!

Hehe, just kidding... Seriously, I agree with the other 2 posts. I've got a flashed 9800 in my main system and a TI-4200 in my 2nd rig so I'm not biased toward/against either card. I buy the best card for the $$$ regardless of who makes it. I think the 9800NP is the best bang for the buck card right now but since you've already got a great card I'd hold on to your it until it can't play a game you like at a reasonable framerate.

Trident all the way!!!

Seriously, do you think alot of 5900U owners are wrestling with this? Keep your card, duh.

Own a 5900 and wont be upgrading to an ATI card anytime soon. I will wait until the games I play dont play very well on my 5900.
Right now it would be foolish for me to ditch the 5900 for an 9800 when I dont really know how the 5900 will fair in HL2. Also there is no need to do such a thing since my 5900 plays every game I own at max rez with 4AA\4AF.

When i purchase my next card I will be looking at both solutions from ATI and Nvidia and then making a purchasing decision then. Buying a 9800 when you own a 5900 would be foolish at best imo.

I own an Ti 4200 and if I upgrade it will not be 9800. Not at todays prices I might be tempted to by the 9600xt when it's available.

That pretty much my position on upgrading as well because I own a Ti4200 (OC to 300|550) and right now it's performing very well. The 9600XT looks interesting although I think it's performance will probably not be much better than the 9600 Pro.

I went from a Ti4400 (now in rig #2) to a Radeon 9800 Pro 128, and the difference in performance was like going from my old MX420 to the Ti4400. In your situation, definetly don't "upgrade."

I've 9800 and going to downgrade. I'm going to pass on this generation and wait until I really need the performance boost.

So it will be 9100 for me. I'm taking the money from my 9800 sale and putting it in my piggybank until I need it for my next card.

I dunno..ive always owned Nvidia and watch all my friends buy ATi cards and see their systems fail horribly. Compatability issues, games don't play/look as well as the Nvidia. Ive seen cards from a 2mb Matrox all the way up to a 9800pro and I just don't think anyone has been able to match Nvidia so far (as far as gaming goes).....its just my opinion though. What works for me may not work for everyone else.

Nvidia has always been great to me and hopefully will continue to do so.

hahaha so to answer your question, definitely not going ATi anytime soon

whats even better...just look at all the threads going on right now in the Video Forums....

"Issues with 9800"
"Problem with 9800pro"
"9700pro won't work WTF!!"
"9800pro low frame rates"
"traded Nvidia for ATi now system won't boot"

blah blah blah.....

im tellin you, its not worth it to go ATi just yet.

For christ sakes, please lock this thread now!

PS, My advice is to wait as well. HL2 isn't going to show its face on a PC for a long time.

That's just silly and illogical IMO. One of the first lessons I learned when working as a tech was that 98% of the problem is between the chair and keyboard 😉 I have experienced some minor compatability issues between ATI cards and nF2 boards but all were easily resolved and the cards worked perfect afterwards. ATI's come a long way baby

Why lock it? GZFant has an opinion to express and he didn't flame or troll.

Preemptive strike to the inevitable flamewar that will ensue. 😛

I plan to have my name changed to "Master of the Apocalypse" soon, as I'm about to slap a PCI Radeon into a system already containing an AGP Quadro4.

Let's see what happens when worlds collide.

The ATi driver horse is dead considering ATi drivers are now more stable(and less cheating too) than Nvidia. You'll have to find another horse to beat to try and scare people off ATi cards now. Try again!
