The standard is bad and needs to be replaced

At this point if Nvidia wants to keep pursuing high wattage halo GPUs doggedly, they should make them external with their own PSU and include a riser cable that attaches to the PCIe slot through the vertical slot opening.

You never hear about data center cards based on the same dies having this problem. Maybe it costs closer to $10,000 to make a better connector.

Anyone else concerned about the power these boards use? I hve never had a GPU with a 200W+ TDP, and I'd like to keep it that way. I may stretch that to say 250W but 300W+ is pretty much a deal breaker for me. I can't imagine the amount of heat those cards put out. Perhaps instead of TDP I should say something more like typical power use while playing a demanding game. It's not like I'm going to go play Furmark .

My RX 6800 gets obnoxiously loud if it's rendering 100+ fps. I don't understand how people deal with 4090 and now 5090 thermals and noise. I guess they must be couch gamers who stay away as far as possible from their PCs.

Buildzoid already posted a rant video...

tl;dw - even though the 5000 series implements the 12v2x6 spec on the connector side, the shorter sense pins may not be enough to prevent burnout.

He also talks about PCB work with shunt resistors that could be used to detect and prevent thermal overruns... they were present on 3000 series GPUs.

My PC case is about 3 feet from my head. I barely hear it even when playing games that push my 4090. I don't hear it at all when wearing headphones.

Heck my 6750 XT gets loud, that’s why I got the 4070 Super in the first place performance per watt and efficiency.

Seriously Ada was so good only bad part about it was the price and VRAM. Meanwhile, Blackwell sucks at price, vram, efficiency, driver issues and even has some regressions.

You are kinda right... but Nvidia made a big song and dance at the recent CES. So everything looked like it was a standard Nvidia release cycle.

If they had no intention to making this a 'standard release cycle' with plenty of stock, they should not have made a big song and dance at CES.

Sure, AI makes more money atm than the gaming segment, everyone knows this. But if Nvidia have effectively lied to their gaming customers, don't they deserve the ire of these 'whiny gamers'?

I'm not a shareholder so I don't care how much Nvidia is worth. The fact is though that people are paying way over MSRP for the very poor upgrade that Blackwell is and demand sets the price.

That's what all companies say when they hit the jackpot. Wait till they hit a pile of something else instead, so they suddenly remember we should all join hands and share the burden. In fact wait until you see the darling A.I. companies of U.S. receive taxpayer money to burn on expensive silicon from Nvidia and others. That's when the real chest dumping will begin, pumping demand with tax money is a beauty. Why lose money when you can have tax money

Living life on the EDGE ... back in 90's young computer enthusiast were associated with a shy, quiet and clever person, but now we live in 2025 where any gamer with deep wallet is living life on the edge, not knowing when his many thousands of dollars investment will burn and if it also burns down his house!!
