Nvidia, ATI and Component video

Is there a way to get component video output from an geforce4 into an HDTV without buying a USD $200 transcoder? I'm looking to buy either a GF4 Ti 4200 w/ 128 RAM or a 9500 pro w/ ATI's component video adapter. Has anyone tried ATI's adapter, can you read text on an HDTV?

Ok I do remember a GF2GTS with component out for sale on some taiwan and korean sites about $400 to get one shipped. Also the GF4s only have 8bit DACs on them, This will give you far worse color seperation and you will really see it on a Large 40" or bigger HDTV. If you already have the card than you best bet is the transcoder. and you can find on for around $120 look for the audio authoity 9a60 here is a link Digital Connection

I forgot to mention that i have the transcoder and the ATI8500DV with the ati dongle. I think the dongle is far easier but the problem is that with the ati solution you just get a desktop and unless you can force special resolution in your games you are out of luck.

With the transcoder you have it buy power strip and become an expert at video timings ... but you cand force certain resolutions that are more game friendly ... although the best think is if you have a dual monitor out card and the space just use the video out for games and the monitor for the desktop.

If you don't already have the TV, consider a model with DVI input.

Thanks for the responses. Will powerstrip or other tweaking programs allow me to play games at customs resolutions on an HDTV? Is there a list of games that run well with custom resolutions?

I remember from Anand's coverage of ATI's dongle, you can run it at 640x480 progressive. They said it was the best PC to TV output they have ever seen. 640x480 should be compatible with all of the games, right?

I have another question: there's this guy with a TV that has YCrCb inputs. The ATI dongle puts out YPrPb, which is a slightly different color space. Does anyone else use this setup, and if yes, is it easy to correct the color??
