Does anyone know if Nvidia will be releasing offical DX8 drivers soon? I heard that gamers take a big performance hit with DX8 installed. Should I upgrade to it or stick with DX7a? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

rorrim 180,

I currently use DX8 with my Geforce 2 Ultra card. I haven't noticed any performance hit at all (of course, that might be because my system is so fast that I can't see the difference between, say, 100 fps and 80 fps). So, although I'm not sure if there really is a performance hit, I know that I haven't experienced any problems whatsoever.

I decided to go for it. I upgraded to DX8 and I'm using Nvidia's latest official drivers. I haven't noticed a performance drop in any of my games thus far. I dunno, maybe all of those people who were bitchin about it had screwed up systems. Everything's great here. No complaints.

Actually since DX8 is MS Xbox's choise of GFX API, and the console's going to be based off a GFX chip with NV20 architecture, it's more like DX8 feature set being built to acommodate NV20 hardware than the other way around :)

I'm using 6.49 leaked Detonators with DX8 and I'm yet to encounter a compatibility issue.

hmm,

could this be a problem I am having? I have an Asus GTS 64MB ddr, and DX8, and I get little screen freezes every now and then. Happens like every 30 seconds to 2 minutes, and DOES affect gameplay alot. It did it in WinME, now in Win98, I have all the via patches, and running Nvidia reference 6.31 drivers. I have even blamed my mobo for this happening, and I can't figure this out.

Right jpprod. If you look at DX8 in terms of pixel and vertex shaders you find exactly what NV20 has in hardware.

"i notice a line line from detailed and blur"

Bilinear filtering. Enable trilinear or anisotropic and you should be all set.

Update:

Just installed Microsofts branding spankin' new DX8a release. It doesn't seem to fix much except for some Win2k problems and a few input device "issues". Oh, BTW, after installing DX8 my 3DMark 2k score went up about 150 points. :) Anyway, here is the info about the release:

"This download contains the DirectX 8.0a redist release. DirectX 8.0a contains updates for issues with international installs on Windows 2000 and issues where input devices could have buttons disabled that were enabled with previous DirectX releases. There are no other changes.

The DirectX 8.0a Redist download supports Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me or Windows 2000.
This package requires 25,332 Kb of free space to download.(25 MB)"

If anyone wants it just go to www.voodooextreme.com and follow the link from there.

P.S. INSTALL AT YOUR OWN RISK PEOPLE!
