NVidia 8 series card performance levels

I know there is plenty of chat going on about the new 8600 series cards, and I like many think they are a little underpowered... but is it possible that NVidia is meaning for these to be the new low-end gaming cards, while cards lower than the 8600's are not meant for gaming but more multimedia, etc.

Then they could possible enter a new level of card between the 8600 and the 8800 (an 8700 if you will) which could have something like a 256 bit memory interface, 64 shader processors, and 512MB memory.

It is a very obvious gap and I wouldn't be at all suprised to discover nvidia are waiting on AMD's launch to decide when to introduce such a part.

Would have been far better served using cheapo 1.4ns ram on a 7900GS derivative pcb, than more expensive ram on a narrow bus. Well atleast its pretty much a sure fact that Nvidia gonna need to close the void between the 8800GTS 320mb and 8600GTS, and their not going to be able to do it with a 128-bit bus.

I think there is a possibility that 8600 will be quickly replaced by 8700 with improved specs as in the days of 5600 replaced by 5700.

More than likely we'll get a refresh in another few months and the 8800 will be replaced with the 8900s. They will probably kill off the 8800GTS 320MB type model and have the "8700"
somewhere in the $250-$300 price point. While they save some money by using smaller capacity RAM chips on the 320MB card, they still have to use a relatively expensive G80 chip and a wide memory interface.

I'm sure they will release a card between the 8600 & 8800. Right now these cards are the only sub $200 DX10 cards in the game and I'm sure NVIDIA is making a bundle off them.

It's funny people are complaining about performance, but even the 8500 is faster than any ATI DX10 card that you can buy.

I think we are just seeing NVIDIA take full advantage of their lead now.

EDIT: I was right!!!
