Heh, I used to go to J&R all the time back when I went to high school in downtown manhattan. They're right by where the twin towers used to be (as is my old high school).
There are sometimes some fairly silly (trying to be polite) salespeople, but it's not like Best Buy and CompUSA have geniuses as salespeople. They do have some pretty nice salespeople too though (ok the one guy up in the consumer camera section was cool the last time I went-and arguably knew more about real photography and gear than the nitwits in the SLR section), so that's a plus.
Anyways, I guess the real point of my post is that yes for the last time, J&R is a legit store (I think it stands for the first names of the couple that owns/runs/founded the store). It's kind like a NYC area CompUSA that sells tons of music and DVDs too (I mean like, tons-they have a massive collection).
They are however, not all that massive of a company though, it's just this one store. Although they do a lot of catalog and I guess online sales now so they might be quite a bit bigger by now.
And now, to the real sad point of my story: I have to pay sales tax because I live in NY. *sigh* Well the other point is that it's funny as a new yorker to see people post that J&R is legit, or wonder if it's legit.
