According to Nvidia the 7800GS agp has ben released and will be available for purchase on SUN FEB 5 2006. Can anyone please dig up any info regarding support for this card and DUAL LINK DVI. This feature that is unique to the 7800 series is what allows the 2560x1600 resolutions on the 30 Inch LCDs. I am sorry for posting to vague of a statment. You dont have to be rude about it.. Maybe I should have been more clear in the question. I will try and restate. Yes I know that ATI and Matrox make dual link cards. I was refering to only NVidia based cards. Now that being said, I read a technical brief about the 6800 series chips from nvidia not supporting Dual link DVI and that only the newer 7800series chip supported it. It is entirely possible that info read is false as stated by Wreckage and keysplayer2003. Now because of their insight into this issue I wish to know what AGP 6800 and 7800 boards by any maker support Dual link DVI.

Dual Link DVI is not unique to NVIDIA or the 7800 series. You can get FX and 6800 dual link cards and maybe even 4200. ATI, Matrox and others also have dual link cards.

What in the world possessed you to state this?

Based on the AT article...I'd pass on the 7800GS any day for a MUCH faster (in most situations) and FAR less expensive X850XT:)

Can you even plan lastest games at that res on that card? I think not you would get below 20 FPS

I find that when i turn up the resolution very hight i can turn off the AA and AF and still get images that run acceptable frames and quality for my eyes. I currently am running a BFG 6800 ultra watercooled on a 21 inch crt at 1280x960 4xAA ans 8xAF and simply wish to see what i can get with the dell 30 inch LCD that i have running on a workstation that my buddy uses.

In regards to what coller stated about the card hurting, yes i am aware of the capabilities. i am doing this more as an experiment to see what i can get out of it. just a fun project.

Depends whether they made the core specially for AGP (and possibly limited to 16 pipe) or whether it's the same as the PCI-E cores.

Seems like you are better off getting an X800XT for ~$200 instead of this card, unless you plan on keeping it for longer than a year, where SM3.0 capability will really start to become very important. Or, you could always opt for a 6800GS and try to unlock it. Either way.

Do you know of any specific 6800 card that support this.

I hate to be obvious but he is right. i dont think that the 4,5,6 series have cards out with dual link.
please provide a link to the dual link cards. its not the same as two dvi ports......but you knew that already.

I have found Dual link 6800 series cards.
I am sorry for stating the above.
The problem still remains that the OP sounds like he does not own a MAC. and if he did he wouldent have the ROOM.

look at this.

OH thank you Steelski. As i said i have only been able to find 7800 series with Dual link support fom Nvidia. And thank you for stating that DUAL LINK is not the same as Dual DVI output. There is a major difference between the two.

While this card has some features the X850 XT doesn't... you would have to be crazy to spend $299 on it. I mean, you can grab the X850 XT (which is a good bit faster) for $199 and the 7800GT (PCI-E) for $275... I would probably just get a 7800GT and put a little more with the $25 left over to get a PCI-E motherboard :D

Its not that they do not support the tech. it was just never implemented. I do not know about the quatroooo rooney range but it was never in the desktop.

If anyone with an AGP card is looking to get a 30" display then there are not that many cards.
the X1600pro
the 9600pro mac edition (works on pc)
the 7800 GS and some matrox cards.
these have it for sure.

If you're on a 939 AGP system, a new mobo and 7800GT will be ~25% more than a 7800GS, and offer ~25% more performance, which is the graphics card world is a good price/performance increase, usually you pay a lot more for not much more performance.
If you're on a Socket A AGP system, a 6800GS is a better deal as it gives ~75% of the performance at ~75% of the cost, AND you're more likely to be CPU limited anyway so the extra graphics power is going to waste.

All in all, the 7800GS AGP is a fairly useless product. If you can afford to buy it, there's no point, might as well either get a cheaper card and wait for Socket AM2, or spend a bit more for a PCIe mobo and 7800GT.

I agree...I just glanced at AT's review numbers and wasn't impressed at all. If it's almost always slower than the X850XT, wouldn't that just put it around the performance of a 6800GT/Ultra? Nothing new or appealing there at all...

Unfortunatly all those card seem to be out of stock but you have found what no one else has and posted it here and for that i thank you. I can only pray that whatever OEMs that make the 7800GS AGP at least one of them will implement the Dual Link support for it. I called BFG and spoke with a rep on the phone who didnt know jack about what i was asking and as i see it now they are the only ones i have found that are offering a 7800GS card. i havnt checked ASUS or MSI or anyone else at the moment but i will do some more hunting and see what i can come up with.
