Didn't the original 7800GTX cost more when it was first released? or close to that?

Nah, the 7800GTXs have always been in the $500 range. Maybe $550 if you went for one of the 'extreme' versions.

EDIT: Was it really $599? I have $500 stuck in my head for some reason.

Ouch! If it will out perform two evga 7800gtx KOs, then one would save money opting for this card. I would look into this vs two cards, but it is very expensive if one was planing on just one video card.

650 MSRP isn't so bad considering that the rgular GTX was 600 MSRP and cost about that (if not a little more) at release but demand was high as was availablity and so the price dropped rapidly (about $75 in a month). In this case demand won't be nearly as high and if this is the undisputed performance leader with no response from ATI (unlike with the GTX, since at GTX release R520 was still set for release 1 month later) then there will be no incentive to drop prices, also with such high clocks I can't see yields being that good but hopefully nVidia will surprise me.

They were $599 on launch day. I looked all over the place. Bought the EVGA 7800GTX(450/1200) on launch day. Then the KO's came later for the same $$.

The 7800GTX's were $599 on launch day, but fell rapidly after that. Just take a look at AT's Pricing Engine's history to see that.

What is your rationale for that conclusion please? this is something i had been hoping for as well, and if prices aren't going South, i may as well pounce on the eVGA deal at NE. thanks

Notice they have none in stock? <PLONK>

Once stock appears they'll be jacking up prices accordingly.

Actually I expect the prices to go down. You can get the XL for under $400 now, so I expect the XT should soon go down to $500 in a month or so

For $650 I'll wait. I don't plan on purchasing anything for at least a month anyhow. We'll see how these are in mid December.

So according to your theory, we can expect $700+ 512mb 7800GTX's when they're released? Comforting thought, I'm sure.

If ATi manages to get enough of them out there.

If they continue to send only 3 cards to hundreds of vendors and call it "launched" then prices will remain high. Supply and Demand.

No, because nVidia will have enough stock on hand. I'll assure you they will be shipping more than a handful of cards to a few select vendors (mainly etailers, ala ATI).

Remember the 7800GTX 256MB launch?
