I bought a box of sealed AGP Nvidia 6200 128MB video cards for about $10/piece and planned to use them to assemble a few low end PCs. I also go some work computers (non-gaming PCs) that are currently using a Radeon 9600 128MB, 9200 128MB, 9200SE 64MB, and FX5200 128MB. I'm wondering if I should replace the above video cards with the 6200s. I know that in non-gaming situation, I could get by with less however since I already own the cards, I figured I would like to use the better of them if I can.

Another thing, in this lot of 6200s, even though they are from the same brand (Kaser) which probably rebadges someone else's cards, I got about 6 cards that use active cooling and the rest use passive cooling--some using larger fans than from the reference design. If I do not need the computer to be silent, should I use the active cooling version or use the passive cooling? My rationale is that with passive cooling, it runs hotter but I do not have to worry about the fan going out. Whereas with active cooling, the chip runs cooler and I doubt the fan will go out anytime soon. So what are your thoughts?

i'd go with the active cooling just so you dont have to worry about overheating (sounds like these are OEM pcs with little space inside). I'd probably nto even bother replacing the video cards though, except maybe the fx5200 just because that card is pathetic. The other cards should be able to run vista/areo fine.

I agree ... The ATI 9600 is a faster card in 3D then the 6200's are, so that you should keep ... as for getting by with less, you could but not if you want to be able to run Vista with Aero enabled with reasonable performance.

Also you could likely sell those 5200's & 9200's here on AT for somthing in the area of $20-$25 each if its worth the trouble to you.
