I'll feel compelled to post this here and also on the "motherboard" forum.

"Moms" is complaining that her computer -- with a Gigabyte GA-VM73-S2 mATX motherboard and its currently-configured E2140 dual-core processor is "slow." It's not really slower than it was at the git-go, but -- yes -- "it's slow" even for being overclocked to about 2.1Ghz.

The motherboard's compatibility list covers everything from C2Q Yorkfield cores to C2D Wolfdales and the earlier Conroe cores.

Meanwhile, it appears that last spring, 2010, Intel released a Wolfdale core in the "Pentium" series and recycled the model name of the Conroe E6700 in the "C2D" series. In other words, this Wolfdale core is called the "E6700." As compared to the E8x00 Wolfdales, it only has 2MB of L2 cache, but it runs at 3.2 Ghz stock specification, and an FSB of 1066 (versus 800 for the current E2140 CPU we're using.)

This mobo is certified to run with a 1,333 FSB -- and totally compatible with Yorkies and Wolfies with that spec.

When I contacted Gigabyte, their response was "the Wolfdale E6700 hadn't been tested with the board" or a comparable 610i chipset.

I can guess -- either way -- that the E6700 won't require some BIOS upgrade -- or that it will.

What do YOU think?

If it has the same stepping as a supported CPU, and the mobo supports the FSB spec, then it should work.

Make sure that you flash the BIOS to current, BEFORE you install the new CPU.

Yeah -- that would make sense. Even an "old hand" might overlook it if in too much hurry to make the switch.

I found the following Cus-Review at the Egg. Note that he states " . . 680i" motherboard. The 610i chipset may work even with Yorkfields -- you remember that fiasco, that you couldn't get a 680i to run more than a Wolfie. I need to go back and check for sure. But this isn't a Yorkie -- it's a Wolfie:

"Pros: Hit 3.6ghz with a rosewill z5 cooler right away..then managed to get it stable @ 4.0ghz with a 1600FSB 10x multyplier & 1066 memory..I'm still toying with it..

"Cons: I would suggest watching ur voltage..I almost fried it

"Other Thoughts: So far I'm using this chip with a evga 680I sli motherboard 2gb 800 ram. & 2x 9600gso 384ddr3. It gets me 40-60 fps on bioshock2 @ 1920x1080 all high
