I'll feel compelled to post this here and also on the "motherboard" forum.
"Moms" is complaining that her computer -- with a Gigabyte GA-VM73-S2 mATX motherboard and its currently-configured E2140 dual-core processor is "slow." It's not really slower than it was at the git-go, but -- yes -- "it's slow" even for being overclocked to about 2.1Ghz.
The motherboard's compatibility list covers everything from C2Q Yorkfield cores to C2D Wolfdales and the earlier Conroe cores.
Meanwhile, it appears that last spring, 2010, Intel released a Wolfdale core in the "Pentium" series and recycled the model name of the Conroe E6700 in the "C2D" series. In other words, this Wolfdale core is called the "E6700." As compared to the E8x00 Wolfdales, it only has 2MB of L2 cache, but it runs at 3.2 Ghz stock specification, and an FSB of 1066 (versus 800 for the current E2140 CPU we're using.)
This mobo is certified to run with a 1,333 FSB -- and totally compatible with Yorkies and Wolfies with that spec.
When I contacted Gigabyte, their response was "the Wolfdale E6700 hadn't been tested with the board" or a comparable 610i chipset.
I can guess -- either way -- that the E6700 won't require some BIOS upgrade -- or that it will.
What do YOU think?
