If this has been discussed I apologize, but after a search of the forums I couldn't find my issue. I've had my Nvidia GTX580 for quite some time now, but the periodic crashes I'm getting have finally led me to ask for help. During the middle of gameplay the computer will crash to a uniform color screen most often purple in color. Also the sound coming from my speakers is a horrible stuttering sound. The only way to recover is to hard reset the PC. I do not have a hardware issue, I believe this is an Nvidia driver/hardware specific issue. I've looked on their forums and seen posts where other people has seen this effect and believe Nvidia is covering up an issue with the 500 series of cards. I'm not ready to buy another video card just yet as I'm waiting another year for the beta to be closer in Star Citizen. The games I'm having trouble with for worst to least are: World of Tanks, Civ 5, and recently Age of Wonders III. I'm using the most recent non-beta drivers at 335.23, and I have a stock PC build with no overclocking. I haven't really noticed the issue in any other games.

Any helpful suggestions would be most welcome!

My brother has a very similar setup to yours (EVGA 580/i7 2600K) and was experiencing periodic freezes/crashes when gaming. I had a 580gtx at the time so we traded and he was still having the same issues while I had none.

Turns out his problem was CPU related. He bought a new cooler and that solved his problem. I'm pretty sure he wasn't getting purple screens, but maybe your problem isn't GPU related at all?
