A friend has a Ti 500 and he has been offered a 5200 Ultra for $40. I can't find any comparisons with GeForce3 since it's so old.

Is it worth $40 for him to upgrade? He's a casual gamer.

TIA

Not worthit. The 5200 is a piece of crap. Tell him to keep his geforce3 as its not that much worse.

I tended to notice that my old GF3 ti 200 outperformed my bro's FX 5200. I'm sure an ultra would be on par with his ti 500. No point in upgrading :)

haha if it says Ti, it's better than a 5200 ;) I'm looking to buy a Geforce 3 on ebay just for kicks.

I think youd be surprised as its about the same speed. Tomshardware vga charts show its performance is close to a 8500 and beats it quite often (gef3=8500)

well the card in it's release was meant to replace the ti4200...didn't do too well, but it isn't that horrible... he should get it for $40 because he should be able to sell his ti500 for roughly the same price, maybe loosing just a few dolars. it'll be a slight upgrade.

in most test, the 5200ultra is pretty much the same as the 5600. if that's the case, i've owned both a 5600 and a gf3ti200(oc to ti500). speed wise, i can actually use 4xaa in some games,2xaa in most, and af does not take as much as a toll on performance as it does on the gf3 @1024res.

Some people in here are just ignorant to the 5200. Yeah, it's not great, but it's cheap. It will also <gasp> play any game on the market, including Far Cry. I've got a 32 meg 5200 in a laptop and it plays Far Cry and UT 2004. Provided you can get it cheap enough, it's not a bad card at all...for the money of course.

So will a geforce 4mx 420 or a geforce 2 gts. its only bad in comparison to other cards at the same price range. (ex: gf4)

Nice link nemesismk2. I would not of thought the 5200U would perform that well.

Probably not worth to upgrade. But, if can get the 5200U clear (keeping ti500 also) for $40 go for if can be used otherwise. Might even try it out and see. Could likely sell the ti500 or the 5200U for $40 later if needed.

I used the latest drivers at the time (v44.90) for the fx5200 ultra review and just like all of the fx range their performance has increased since then. The 60.?? drivers are especially good and from what I've heard perform much better with dx9.0c! :)
