I don`t think this has been posted but here what it says,
With the recent announcement that NVIDIA was purchasing 3dfx's core graphics group we got on the horn with former 3dfx PR stud Brian Burke, who left the company a couple months back to join the NVIDIA boys, which now looks like one hell of a smart move. Anyhow - we fired off some questions about the 'merger' and how it would affect us (as in the gaming industry, etc) and here's what the man had to say:
Apache -- How long did the negotiations to purchase 3dfx last? Was this a deal long in the making?
Brian Burke -- That is not one of the details we are announcing, but these things do take time.
Apache -- What will happen to the majority of engineers working at 3dfx? Will they be assigned to NVIDIA projects, laid off or sold into the Asian mail-order husband program?
Brian Burke -- This is a purchase of the core graphics assets, not a buy out of the company as a whole. The future of 3dfx employees will be determined by the remaining 3dfx entity. However, I know they have some very talented 3D engineers and we would be lucky if they choose to pursue employment at NVIDIA. NVIDIA being involved in the mail order husband industry is merely a rumor and we do not comment on rumors as a company policy.
Apache -- Will NVIDIA be integrating 3dfx's technology into its future products?
Brian Burke -- We own the patents to their technology, so that is certainly an option. It is well known that they are a pioneer in 3d graphics and have award wining technology. That being said, we are not making any future product announcements at this time.
Apache -- A lot of people are concerned that support for legacy 3dfx products like the Voodoo5 will be dropped. Will this be the case?
Brian Burke -- We are not purchasing their current product line. That is a responsibility of the remaining 3dfx entity. That question is better addressed to 3dfx management.
I sent off some other questions, but these are the ones I got answers to. Anyhow - thanks to Brian Burke and NVIDIA
