Discover uses red/cyan anaglyph glasses and imagery to create the 3D effect, so yes, it's going to distort a game's graphics. Color quality goes right out the window, and overall a game definitely is not as clear.

However Discover isn't meant for long-term use, it's only meant for demoing the 3D properties of 3D Vision using cheap glasses and a regular monitor. For long-term use, you're meant to use a 120Hz LCD monitor along with shutter glasses (which unfortunately, isn't cheap).

Any any case, the 3D effect definitely works though, and that's something that will be easy to see with Discover.

Do I need to patch the games to support this feature or the 3d effect is handled by the card?

Will it also work with movies (even if the colors get distorted)?

Yes it is really cheap, you can get a card support this for as low as $100.

Is it any better than using something like iz3d's driver with some cheap (cardboard?) glasses?
http://www.iz3d.com/driver
Seems like $100 for a not-very-good 3D setup is a bit of a waste of money and not really a cheap way to 'discover' it.

iz3d is not free and only for ATI cards. I have an NV atm. But nice share. I wonder if there are any custom drivers out there to create the 3d effect for NV cards?

I am not a heavy gamer and I just wanted to experience how 3d gaming is like. Can't afford those shutter glasses and 120Hz screens.

No to the patching (drivers handle it), yes to working with movies (they need to already be 3D, obviously).

1) It works with both ATI and NV systems.
http://www.iz3d.com/compatible

2) The basic driver for using movie-type glasses (cyan/red) is free for at least 30 days (on the page I linked), and is even designed to let you experience what 3D can be like. It's basically a cheap way to discover 3D, rather than paying $100 to NV to "Discover".

I tried this a few months ago with World of Warcraft. The 3D is great, definitely worth the try. The color is awful though.

Why would this cost $100? The feature is already present in the driver and can use regular paper glasses AFAIK.

hiddensniper11 said he could get a card to support 3D Vision Discover from NV for $100. I was comparing that to paying nothing except maybe $2 for some paper glasses to use iz3D with what he already has.

Gotcha, he said later that he already has an Nv card. The Anaglyph stuff has been available in the drivers for a long time now (in various forms since 2001), and does not require a new card.

Thanks for the replies Lonyo, aka1nas. I'll check out iz3d, any ideas where to get the materials to make my own 3d glasses?

@Wreckage, can you explain how the game's colors are affected in 3d mode? Too much cyan/red?

They kind of blend together for an overall brown color. It's kind of hard to explain. Basically the colors are way off.

But the 3D effect was great.

3D Discover is free if you have an nVidia card. The driver has a built in sterioscopic setting that you can turn on. Then just find those goofy red/cyan glasses and game away. Works great to see the 'effect'. Colors are so bad that they will mess with your eyes though. Cool to see what games will work great with it and what games will not. I am close to jumping on the bandwagon, but the fact that some things are not rendered correctly, or in 2D kind of ruins it for me.
