Nvidia 200 series price drops?

I've been looking at getting a new graphics card and have pretty much settled on the GTX 275. With the ATI thing on the 10th do you think the price on the 200 series will drop and would it be worth waiting for it? I won't be getting the card until the end of this month anyway I think but kind of hope the prices go down a bit before then.

by then you might be able to buy one of the new ATI cards anyway, i would wait until then cause we will probably get benchmarks on them not long after. even if you dont like what you see, once they come out last gen hardware should drop in price anyway

I don't think they will drop too much. A 260 is already $150. The 285/295 may drop a little bit though.

depends on 5xxx perf and price. When 2900xt released the 8800 series actually went UP in price.

Do you guys really think there is going to be tons of ATI stock for their new cards? Maybe by the holiday Black Friday season.

I remember back in the good old days that ati and nvidia used to trade blows every 6 months or so with each release trumping the previous. For everybody's sakes I hope the new cards take the top spot and drive nvidia's prices down.

Maybe not, but their 40nm issues have been resolved for awhile now, I don't think it will be the OOS debacle we saw with the 4770. They may be limiting their mass availability of a couple models by releasing an entire lineup at once though

Cards never drop below a certain point, the production stops and they just go out of stock. I think we're already close to that point :(

I hope they get cheaper, might want to get a second 260, especially now that I am folding.

Thanks for the replies, guess it's just a case of waiting to see what ATI come up with on the 10th, hopefully they'll save me a few quid :)

That's guaranteed. A 1 Ghz 4890 is already as fast as a GTX285. You actually think 5870 will be only 15-17% faster than a 4890?

I hope they dont do too well though, would be bad for competition, and besides, I would want to wait for GT300. Hopefully it would be even better, and would certainly be better with folding.

Shmee how does ATI not blowing NV out of the water better for competition? If ATI smokes NV, NV will have to work that much harder to produce a card that's at least as fast or faster, or lower prices. It is when there is little to no competition that we experience high prices for a long time.

no no no, I said that competition is good. I just dont want a scenario where there is only one viable card on the market, and its prices skyrocket. I guess I should say that I hope GT300 comes out soon!

There is no indication that ATi is doing anything to their current architecture that would make them smoke a new architecture and DDR5 switch by nV.

My comment had nothing to do with GT300. The comment was in response to this:

"I remember back in the good old days that ati and nvidia used to trade blows every 6 months or so with each release trumping the previous. For everybody's sakes I hope the new cards take the top spot"

In other words, the new ati card will take the top spot for the time being compared to GT200 architecture.

I think that the hope is that 5870 will beat gtx 295. 4850 = 3870x2, so if 5850 = 4870x2 then 5870 should >= gtx 295. We'll know when pricing comes out. If 5870 really is the true king then 399 is probably reasonable for it; if gtx 295 and/or 4870x2 beats it then 299 is much more likely. 5850 is harder to get a handle on, rumors have it much closer in price to its big bro than 4850 was to 4870.

I think the 4850 = 3870x2 is saying more about the 3870x2 than it is about the 4850.

As I have said before, I will be impressed by either major player equaling the 295 with a single GPU at launch. Remember, cards seem to get a 10-20% boost after drivers mature 3 or so months later.

oh, I must have misinterpreted something. I am sure that the HD 5 series will take top spot, and am glad for it. I would not be glad if GT300 trails too far after.

well I'll bet you see gtx 380 around Christmas time. If its in november, then they're early, and if its not out by new years eve, then they're draggin' ass.
:D

hey this is true. The need to do a better job on launch with the cat 9.10's than they did with the HD4000 drivers.
