The 158.18 drivers have been exceptionally good for me on Vista Home Premium 64-bit. All my major issues with the control panel and game settings have been cleared up, and there are no more BSODs. My XP 32-bit was never this stable/functional. Specifically, nVidia left the desktop/video color settings broken on XP and Vista for the longest time for my 7900 GTO.
Are the nvidia drivers still this bad? FYI, this is a CLEAN install of vista and the drivers, so it's not user error.
No, they're not "still" this bad. Most of the stability issues disappeared way back when the 100.64 drivers came out. The CP was still a half-working mess at this point, but at least the drivers were stable. The 158.18 release fixed a huge number of CP problems and are actually better for me than the latest stable G7x drivers for XP.
That said, you will *always* find people who have stability problems with certain drivers. Possible causes include unstable overclocks, unstable hardware, and driver bugs--all of which may only manifest themselves in particular situations such as running Vista 64-bit. My advise to you and others have stability problems with the lateast drivers is to make very *certain* there are no hardware problems and then contact nVidia using their Vista feedback link (on the driver index page).
