This could be bad news for 3D Gamers. I saw this over at Yahoo:

Friday October 20, 12:30 am Eastern Time
NVIDIA seen as possible buyer of 3Dfx-Business Week
NEW YORK, Oct 20 (Reuters) - NVIDIA Corp (NasdaqNM:NVDA - news), a maker of
computer chips for three-dimensional graphics, was seen as a possible buyer
of rival 3Dfx Interactive (NasdaqNM:TDFX - news), according to a report in
the October 30 issue of Business Week, which quoted an unnamed analyst.

3Dfx said last week it received ``favorable rulings'' in patent litigation,
in which NVIDIA claimed that 3Dfx's graphics chip and card products infringe
on five NVIDIA patents.

Neither 3Dfx nor NVIDIA was immediately available for comment.

I really hope Nvidia doesn't do this. It would take away too much of their competition. You may say 3dfx isn't a competitor anymore, and that it doesn't matter, but that really isn't true. Sure, 3dfx has practically no OEM presense, but they are still a major retail competitor.

I think this same magazine reported a few weeks ago that Maxtor would get taken out for $20- the stock rallied. But instead they bought Quantum's division. And the went back to 8-9. All in about a week. That's the only concrete example I have, but generally, I don't pay much attn to BusWeek bc they don't seem to be right very often!

For 3dfx to survive, someone has to buy it. The company is just not making any profit since the voodoo 2 or since the buyout of STB.

Deeko, being a "major retail competitor" is the same as not being a competitor at all.
If they have equal products, and sell an equal number of boards in the retail channels, while nVidia sells 10x as many boards in the OEM sector, how long do you think 3dfx will remain competitive(sp?)?

This could be true it might be cheaper for nvidia to buy 3dfx than to pay them royalties(they won their lawsuit) on every chip they ever sold and perhaps evenlose the right to sell their curent/future chips because they violate 3dfx's patent. Micro$oft would not let this happen since they need nv25 for the x-box.

It's all over. It's our fault. We let NVIDIA get too big. Now they already are charging some outrageous prices for 3D video cards now if they buy 3dfx it will continue.

From now on. NO MORE NVIDIA.
