The NV40 will have eight physical pipelines, but they can act like 16, according to the sources.

According to information available on several websites, ATI?s R420 will feature 12 working pipelines, with a possible maximum of 16.

Despite the different architectures it?s unclear who will dominate the upcoming performance battle between the R420 and the NV40, said the sources.

I?ve read that the NV40 may be able to double up to 16 pipes by using the vertex shaders for pixels sometimes ? or something like that.

lol...its funny that people make fun of ATI for creating clearer pictures. there is a noticeable difference sometimes, and not on 200% zoom.

Creating clearer pictures? ArtX is the design team that ATi PURCHASED the R9700 design from... Thats what people rag on, the big "what if ATi didnt buy that great design?" question :) After all theyve rode it through 2 core revisions now, soon to be a 3rd.

And theres always the further question, Where will ATi be without ArtX on their next gen core when they finally stop milking the ArtX architecture.;)

Some people have noted the R300 was a lot like the R200, and that PS2.0 was a not entirely huge step from PS1.4. I'm not sure you can say R300 = ArtX, but it does seem like acquiring ArtX gave ATi the kick in the pants it needed to compete at the top.

Definately it gave them a kick. Guys like David Orton and Tim Van Hook made a huge difference in the direction of ATI. You could just as easy as say SGI, since thats where they escaped from.

Only fanboys rag on "what ifs". What if the FX5800 had actually delivered as promised? Or what if the Radeon 8500 could have actually competed with the GF3 out of the gate, instead of waiting for about 10 driver revisions to give it comparable speeds? Ragging on a "what if" is lame. If you (speaking of fanboys in general) are going to cry that ATI made a smart acquisition and got loads of technological benefits from it, then you should cry about NVidia buying all that 3dfx tech.

IMO it says something about NVidia that they haven't managed to catch up IQ wise over two core revisions. It equally says something about ATI that they are STILL having to update their drivers quite frequently to fix a large number of game issues. Hopefully we won't have all the BS that came with the NV3x and R3x0 cores with the next generation parts. There's too much ammunition for these fanboy pissing contests with the current crop of cards. :)

It doesnt matter i dont really care one way or the other. I was just clarifying what i was saying earlier about ArtX.

Doubt it, artx had 0 actual good products to come out of them other than the gamecube chips, before they were bought by ati

People use the term "x0" to signify "zixels," or colorless (thus the "0"--no color means it's not really painted on screen, I think) pixels used for shadows (which Doom 3 will have a lot of). It's really kind of a hacked term, but it's fairly simple to use and easy to distinguish from pixels and "texels." So NV35 is 4x2/8x0, meaning it has a:

pixel fillrate of 4 pipelines x 1 pixel per pipeline x 400MHz = 1.6GP/s
texturing rate of 4 pipes x 2 textures/pipe x 400MHz = 3.2GT/s
zixel rate of 4 pipes x 2 zixels/pipe x 400MHz = 3.2G"z"/s

NV40 is reported to be able to calculate 32 zixels per clock, an absolutely enormous jump from NV35's 8 per clock, especially if NV40 will arrive at the same or faster core clock and with faster memory. Perfect for high-res D3, I'd wager. :)

The ATi team was just as involved in creating the R300 as the ArtX team was. Saying ATi just purchased the finished product and started shipping it is completely inaccurate.

haha I love hearing all the ATI fanboys stand by ATI even in the face of overwhelming odds, you know, nVidia used to be king, and now ATI is, things change, and I have a feeling they will change again.

Your talking as if you were part of the ArtX/ATI design team at the time. Were you? If not, how exactly do you know who did what in that deal? Was there a memo? Cause I didn't get it. ;)

I Know! Matrox will buy the Volari tech from XGI, make it work properly the first go, and release a next-gen quad-head card that will destroy both NV and ATI! :D
Edit:
I just heard from the janitor of a friend of a friend this is REALLY going to happen!

The specs he was able to obtain was:
Core: 2x700MHz
Mem: 512MB 800MHz GDDR3
Pipes: 16x2 (per core, times 2 cores, so effectively 32x4)

Its the same old PR Marketing Hype, before every new release. I am just going to wait and see.

I hope that Nvidia rocks, its way back to the top. This will make ATI, work even harder and produce even better cards.
