NV40 and R420s?

Well I just bought a radeon 9800 Pro for 230 on newegg.com and I was thinking i should have waited for the NV40 or R420. But these cards will cost like 400-500 dollars so i would not be able to afford it anyhow but i could have bought a more budget version of R420, idk how long do u think the radeon 9800 pro will alst me and should i have waited until the R420 or NV40 and do u think they will be like 2x faster then the 9800 pro or just like 1.2-1.5x faster.
 
You should be ok for a while Heck I think you can wait to the next set of cards after this before upgrading.
 
Well, whether you should have waited depends on a few things. Things like your current CPU/MOBO/RAM, how soon you plan to upgrade any or all of these things and what games you're planning on buying soon and in the future. At the very least, you have a powerful card that you can enjoy right now. Don't worry though, there's always the NEXT upgrade cycle, right? 🙂
 
Honestly, unless you are spoiled at playing every game at 4AA/8AF, then your Radeon 9800Pro will become obsolete in 6 months when (if on time) Half Life 2 and Doom 3 come out. There are some games where the 9800 Pro begins to struggle today with high quality settings. Of course, you could always revert to using 1600x1200 and no quality settings on. Believe me, at that resolution half of the jaggies everyone complains about disappear anyways. In that respect, your card will easily last you another 2 years. The basic argument is that either a) your card has features which current/future games take advantage of like prettier pixel shaders and effects, etc. b) it's so fast you can play any game with high quality settings. In your case your card supports Pixel Shaders 2.0 I believe, and the games on 3.0 won't come out for a year. I remember getting my Radeon 8500, it took 1 year for a decent 8.1 game to come out after I bought it. And to this day I can play any game (aside Far Cry for some reason?), at least at 1024x768. Need for Speed Underground at 1280x1024, so is Unreal 2, Unreal Tournament 2003 at 1600x1200, Call of Duty at 1280x1024, and with some i can use AA or AF. And my card is like 3 years old now? I just dont understand the use of running a game at 300FSP, or vs. running it at 50-60, except for bragging rights. Now my card doenst have the latest direct x 9 featurs so i will miss some of the eyecandy anyways, but yours wont for a while so you have that side covered. If you can live without having to turn on AA and AF at every point and resolution and compromise, then you have nothing to worry about. Just read this article, and you'll will know that for future direct x 9 games, everyone who bought nvidia fx cards should be crying right now. If you are a person who doesnt like to compromise, then of course you'll always need a top of the line card to play at the highest resolution + best quality image possible. And a less expensive version of 420 won't come out for another several months, I believe September is when the mainstream versions will arrive. That's a long time to wait.
 
oh boy.... I just love how some ppl ask... "so, how many times faster will the new card, chip or whatever be comparing to the stuff I have now..." and "how long will my video card last..."
all I can say... is.... sigh...
 
i still have my radeon 9700pro that i bought just when these babies hit the store shelves, and i can rut every game out now with 6xAA, 16xxAF (i have these settings forced on in the driver menu). I dont see myself upgrading it to a 9800XT - neighter to the next generation cards. I will MAYBE update when R500 or something like that comes out.

As for now, when games dont run smoothly with AA and AF i will turn it off - but i don't see myself doing that anytime soon.

Yey my brother is thinks the same he bouhgt Radeon 9700 Pro when it first came out and still has it. He is planning to purcahse a NV40 or R420 card when that comes out thou.
 
The 9700 has been a venerable card. ATI did well there. Those 9500 Pro's that were modded to 9700s were even better.
 
I had my Ti4200 for 2 years, and just got my 9800 PRO. If its got half the longevity of my Ti4200 Ill be damn happy. The others are correct though. Unless you want the next gen games in 8xAA 16xansio or something, the 9800 PRO will last just fine.
