NV38 to be quiter than 9800xt

The most important "news" here being:

Meanwhile, the NV36 chip is a completely redesigned babe, and NVDA has high hopes this one will be a runner.

But, it is theInq!

Yeah, it might be quieter, but it uses 2 slots (try using a SFF PC). You can get a Zalman HS and founda low rpm very quiet fan on it, and have better cooling, and there you have a Radeon with quieter and better cooling (than stock).
Compare apples to apples, 2 slot too 2 slot cooling (Sapphire do cards with Zalamns fitted as standard (9700Pro at least), before anyone says you can't buy them :p)

I would really like it if either nVidia or ATI made a joke of this numbering system, and made a card called the GeForce FX 94,000,000,000 Ultimate Super Duper ... or the Radeon 128,000,000,000 Super Fantastic Pro.

This is correct. I can't hear my stock 9800P anyway, so it's kind of a moot point. You have 2 cards you can't hear.

I'm all for quiet and am glad to see mfgrs paying more attention to it. You cant really generalize one chip makers card vs another's noise level. There are a lot of video card makers out there. Each of them may use very different cooling designs. Some mfgrs stick with the GPU ref design, some modify it with a different fan, some use a completely different design. It really depends on the video card maker.

God who cares about using a PCI slot?

On my ASUS A7N8X Deluxe I have 5 count them 5 free PCI slots. I dont use any of them......and if I did I can use one of the other 4 open slots.

Soon they will start allocating all of their resources and money to design ultra quiet cooling systems, leaving pocket change to develop the chips. And then computers wont be able to run the latest games so all of the people who would be will go out and commit crimes and the entire world will break into hysteria. Then the US and the Canadians will engage in a nuclear war that will wipe out both countries and all of the radioactive fallout will exterminate all living creature elsewhere! Oh my!

...anyway, as long as it is quiet enough that it is not very noticable, its fine with me.

^ And you speak for everyone, right? Some people actually use 2-3 PCI cards.

But I do agree with having video cards that take up 2 slots. It makes a lot of sense for a number of reasons. Better cooling, for one can be achieved in a number of ways:

-larger HSF on the unit
-more "exotic" exhaust systems out the back of the system
-a bigger space between the AGP card and the next PCI card (less gathering of hot air)
-etc

and also the card can be screwed in twice, giving added stability. All in all I think AGP cards taking 2 slots don't really have any disadvantages over 1-slot cards for the end user (using a normal Tower case.. 95% of users).

I kind of like the 2 slot idea. I like exhausting the video card heat out of the back of the case instead of just blowing it back inside. As long as it is quiet, its a good idea.

I also agree, this just makes sense.

A nice quiet nV38 would be dandy.

I wonder if they're going to attend to any other major design flaws? Not that they'd need to work on any of THOSE.

I second that agreement

I wonder if nVidia have also reduced the clock speeds on the card to get it run cooler?

Who cares? Im more interested in performance than noise. I wear a pair of sennheiser hd 280 pro studio monitor headphones. I could care less how loud it is
