NVIDIA'S PARTNERS have decided to give the graphics chip giant one more chance with its high end products, following the well worn codename tradition we've come to love.

Most of this informations we knew much earlier but it was impossible to validate it till now.

At the end of January, Nvidia taped out this new chip and many people wondered whether this chip that it actually showed at CeBIT was all that it was claimed to be.

The NV30U/Geforce FX 5800 Ultra may well become a collectible in the same class as Intels' first Itanic, Sendo's Z100 Stinger Smartphone, the Alpha NT OS, or the mighty Voodoo 5 6000.

Terratec was the only Nvidia partner to our knowledge that shipped any Geforce FX 5800 Ultras and then it wasn't in vast numbers, all quickly gobbled up by rapacious German enthusiasts.

The NV35 will be a 0.13 micron part that will use DDR one memory not DDR 2 as many would expect, but this time it will have 256 bit memory bus, just like ATI uses in its Radeon 9700, 9800 product lines. DDR 2 memory is a Q4 product, very hot and very expensive so this will have to wait at least for a few quarters.

As you can read in other story, the NV35 will use 2.2 ns memory available from Hynix and Samsung capable of running at just above 900 MHz. For NV35 Ultra this will be the frequency as the card will be clocked at 450 MHz for the GPU and 900 MHz for memory.

Anyone familiar with the Dramurai biz knows that JEDEC decided that DDR 1 stops at 400 MHz so this memory will use some sort of overclocking to get it to work above the specification, apparently.

The cooling solution is obviously going to be more reasonable and not so loud as the FX racket was and the partners have high hopes for this Nvidia product.

There will be two versions of NV35, Ultra and non Ultra obviously.

The launch date is Los Angeles E3 between 12th and 15th of May and production time is sometime in June but this could easily mean late than early June, although more than a few Nvidia partners are quite optimistic about June. As for non-Ultra boards, the clock speed will be 425/850MHz and we know that these boards are in R&D shops for two weeks now. The possible name, that we still cannot confirm is Geforce FX 6800 Ultra and non Ultra. µ

The bottom line here is performance and noise. If those two factors are in line then they are set. I hope they are because we need competition in the GPU business. It's better for all of us that way.

My guess of 850 mhz memory wasnt too far off. I guess 900mhz yeilds 28.8gB/s thats 12.8gB/s more than the 5800 Ultra. I sure hope it turns out well.

I'd expect it to overtake the Rad9800PRO but not by a huge margin, of course it won't be too long before ATI release the 0.13mu Rad9800PRO and then later DDR-II version too. I'd say ATI still have the upper hand but it will be interesting to see how things turn out. I don;t think we'll see fudged solutions like the GF-FX5800ultra which was blatently nothing more than an un-mass-producable part intentionally o/c'ed in a last gasp attempt to keep up (let alone surpass) ATI.

If the image quality is not improved over the other Nvidia cards it really will not matter how fast it is.

If the current FX is using DDR II memory, then why is it suddenly too hot and expensive for the NV35?

well, i ddr II (among other things) was too hot and expensive for the nv30 -> that is why it failed. Nvidia realized they simply couldnt produce enough cards and earn a profit while employing technologies that arent ready yet. Better to use current technology (that is not to say innovation is bad).

The 5800U already is faster then the 9800 pro in some benchmarks without aa and aniso, so I would think if nvidia can do aniso and aa more efficiently they will have a true winner.
