NV30 only 6 pipelines? According to this Digitimes article

As for the company?s NV30 chip, industry sources revealed that the postponed launch is due to a design change, not a yield rate problem in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company?s (TSMC) 0.13-micron process as market rumors suggested. Hoping to enhance the product?s overall performance to compete with ATI?s top-end Radeon 9700 PRO, the sources suggested that Nvidia may alter its original six-pipeline architecture to an eight-pipeline one.

Heh. Good way of putting it. Guess that's the advantage of being second to market with a DX9 card. Good thing nVidia doesn't know what else ATi has up their sleave for Q1 2003, just a few short months after NV30's release.

Either way both companies will keep dishing out faster and faster products. ATI seems to be taking a foothold now that it has a mobile video card that is, at times, 15 to 20 percent faster than a GF440 go. ATI is executing very well this time and it's paying off, lets hope they keep it up.

Now if we only wouldn't have to wait YEARS to see games that actually take full advantage of these new cards.

😛

It is all paper so far.
Fastest card out now is the GF4 with the NEW Detonator 40 Drivers, with up to a 25% improvement, you can get your hands on today.

ingram shipped a few 1000 9700s last week.

isn't 8 pipes a dx9 requirement?

You mean the BETA drivers? 😛

The 9700 has shipped!

ingram shipped a few 1000 9700s last week. are you smoking crack?
No.
While a few cards have been released, you still can't walk into Best Buys and purchase a card or purchase one from Newegg.

Uh, I thought Sept. 3rd/4th was the earliest the 9700's were going to ship to customers (yeah, I know, it's only a few days away). 🙂

Do I have to explain the difference between Beta and certified to YOU, also? 😀

Obviously, Nvidia isn't "finished" with their BETA Det 40 drivers as it only appears to help a few apps (2DMark2001).

Shut it popmen, before you "accidentally" get banned. 😉

Anyway, Brandon, try downloading the Det. 40's off NV's web site, and you'll see the Det. 40's are labeled as beta drivers...but the 30.82's are still available anyway...

Accidently? 🙂 Just clarifying things for our Nvidia fanboys.

😀

j/k'ing . . . I like eveyone here. I am just surprised that some here thought 1) Nvidia had the fastest available video card and 2) the Det 40 drivers are BETA.

1) If they weren't finished, they wouldn't be posted.
2) If the drivers were crap or "not worthy" of being downloaded by the public, NVIDIA wouldn't have made a press release and launched them on the website
3) "Unfinished" drivers IMHO are leaked drivers that NVIDIA doesn't endorse

So I'm still not seeing your point.

And when I originally clicked on the reply button to your post, you had not yet added the BETA part to your post...not that it matters anyway.

apoppin, 9700's are in the channel, but that doesn't mean anyone can get their hands on one yet. Although I'm being nitpicky; by the end of the week/beginning of next week, people should actually have 9700's in their hands.

Since you are being "nitpicky", I will be also. If you read my links to Hot Deals, some early orderers ALREADY have their "9700s in their hands".

My point . . . when's the LAST time you remember BETA drivers available from Nvidia? Obviously they are hurting (by ATI).

And how much has the REAL performance improved on your system (NOT 3DMark)? Curious.

EDIT: Read the COMPLAINTS in the Det 40 Beta Driver release thread. Obviously they still need work (that's MY definition of "unfinished").

And ATI's Catalyst drivers are perfect?? Far from it...give me a break😱

From Nvidia:

Detonator 40 is the beta graphics driver for all NVIDIA Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). Detonator 40 supports 2D graphics, DirectX 8.1, OpenGL 1.4, nView Desktop Management software version 2.0, NVRotate. NVKeystone, Digital Vibrance Control and includes a new control panel and the CineFX emulator. Through NVIDIA?s Unified Driver Architecture, Detonator software supports all GPUs below in a single driver.

Sigh.

I'm off to work.

Peace and aloha.

Is this turning into another Nvdia - ATI flame war?

I surely hope not. It was not my intention to provoke. If I did, then I am sorry.

apoppin out.
