NV24HD - Good all-in-one camera?

GasX

Lifer
I have a nice (albeit ageing) Canon SD870 digital camera and a Optura 20 miniDV video camera. I just came across the Samsung NV24HD and was amazed you can get it for $200 with an 8GB storage card. Would this be a good device to handle stills and video so I can leave behind the annoying video tapes and combine devices.

Is there a better option in the same price range?

Your Canon also shoots video, although there only 640X480.

So your reasons for upgrading are:?
1- higher resolution images - 8mp vs 10mp
2- higher resolution movies - (640X480) vs 720P
3- combine devices

To me the slight bumb in res is not enough to warrant an upgrade.

Maybe if it you were asking about the Nikon D90 or Canon 5d Mark II(D-SLRS that shoot video), or the Canon HV30/HV20 (tape based 1080 camcorders), then I'd give a thumbs up, but these options are out of your price range.

What do you shoot?

Seems like it sucks as a camera but is the only game in town for video at that quality.

Would the D90 be a good all-in-one?

my pics/videos are primarily of my familiy - in particular my small and fast moving sons.

Well, the D90's an SLR, so I don't know if you would be comfortable using it and lugging it around.

Panasonic makes several cameras that shoot 720p video.

Have you tried your Canon's video capabilities?

I often capture 20 second "moments", but I have never considered using it to do more than that. I am interested in starting to capture digital format HD though...

Panasonic's TZ5, FX37, FZ28, etc all offer 720p video recording and are much better at taking still pictures (which is the most important aspect of a camera in my opinion)

Are they good enough to be a primary video recording device?

If what you're doing is capturing short (seconds to minutes) clips of memorable events, then yes, they are fine. If you're trying to start movie producing business, then no point and shoot will do the job.

Well, here's the thing: digital cameras are made to take photos first, video a distant second, just as videocams are made to do the inverse.

If you want quality video and quality stills, there is still no substitute for separate devices.

Does Samsung even make a good camera?

GX20

ert, that's a pentax
I think credit can be shared, given Samsung's involvement in the K20D's CMOS sensor.

Define good. Relative to Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony and Panasonic? No.

Would it work as a decent point and shoot? Maybe. I have never touched a Samsung or read about them. I guess there are too many other great choices.

As far as the D90.... yes it is a fantastic camera. The best DSLR in it's class. It happens to do video. Would I get it if I were the OP? No. It's overkill.
