<< What else was NVIDIA showing off at COMDEX, you ask? NV20 was nowhere to be seen...at least officially. But being the detective I am, I kept my eyes and ears open and was able to puzzle together some information. It seems that the NV20's core will differ in some respects from the NV2A of the X-Box, as the render pipes will have differing optimisations. The chip will introduced very early next year. Besides offering increased performance, it will also bring along a completely overhauled core.
NV20 is a completely new design and is not based on the GeForce family. Rumor has it we can expect a similar jump as we saw going from the TNT2 to the GeForce256. One thing seems to be sure, though: The chip will no longer carry the GeForce name. The chip was demonstrated to a select audience behind closed doors...but of course everything is strictly NDA. I could tell you a bit but after that I have to kill you 🙂.

I was thinking the same thing charles.

I've been wondering what nVidia would call their next GPU, didn't think it would be GeForce3.

But the question that interests me most, will there be an NV20-MX?

True, but most were thinking the NV20 would be called GeForce 3 and would be a souped up Ultra 😉

I want to make a stupid wild guess. There was TNT, GeForce.

What about Grenade? Bomb? or something else we could Detonate. 😀

Detonate is involved in the driver names already. Likely the name will be made up, like Geforce was, and unexpected.

It's pretty much guarenteed that they'll be a NV20-MX, Riva had a cheap version and TNT had it's cheap version too. It's just a matter of when it'll be out. nVidia usually has a 6 month product cycle so after NV20, NV20-2, Super NV20-2 Turbo Championsion Edition Ultra 😉, they'll be a NV20-MX.

hmmm what will they call it???? POLL TIME

tnt dynamite explosive
geforce g force gravitational pull humans can withstand what around 9 g's right?

if near a tnt explosion your thrown, while flying you have velocity velocity (sound card once right???) velocity in airplanes gives gforce gforce makes you pulled against gravity to resolve that you want anti gravity or null g, i think Null g is a decent name, or maybe their refering to the 100x gravity endurance displayed in dragon ball z. . . what is a term for that. . .

there wasn't a cheapo version of the riva 128. nor the zx. not sure about the twintexel but the twintexel 2 had the m64 and vanta boards. the geforce didn't really have a cheapo version, i guess you could call teh $200 SDR the cheapo version, but it wasn't after we were used to paying $130 for tnt2s and v3s.

Sounds "completely new" to me 😛

Ok, we have conflicting quotes. Sounds to me like the author really doesn't know anything substantial about the NV20 at all. 😉

Certainly no one was thinking this, NV20 has been rumoured to be "nVidia's Rampage" (completely new design ground up, 24 months in development) for quite some time. Or was this a sarcastic remark, and I'm making a complete idiot out of myself 🙂

Anyway, this is how I see the "Xbox chip" and NV20 relate to each other:
- work with NV20 was begun when NV10 was taped out. Months before NV10 announcement I recall reading outrageous rumours about how fast NV20 was going to be compared to another then-upcoming graphics technology, Sony's PS2 chip, Emotion Engine.
- Microsoft got a glimpse of NV20, and nVidia got the Xbox deal. However, directly taking the PC-version of NV20 would be too expensive for a console, and nVidia begun designing the NV2A which we know as the Xbox chip.

I think they should call it the McNugget. Myself, I'd wait for the McNugget 2 Ultra, with a side order of fries. Ooh, ooh, and some of that luscious sweet and sour sauce. Mmmmm, Mc-Nugget.... <drools>

How 'bout TNT3-Force Plus? Bah, I'm so bad with names. 😛

"Beast" would be a nice name. Doesn't fit with nvidia's "blow things up" vibe, though. How about "Nuke", "Reactor", "Volcano"....hmmm what else blows up real good?
