NV 81.98 causing sound prob?

Just installed Half-Life 2 & first time loading it recomended updating vid driver so I went ahead (been meaning to anyway). Then after loading game I have no sound. I'm using on-board & headphones. After stoping a few times to check settings I got a BSOD NV4_disp, = device driver stuck in infinite loop. UT04 has sound but I can hardly hear it. All I did was uninstall - install vid drivers & re-enable CoolBits. Is there an issue with these drivers? Should I update the audio driver as well (4.60 to 4.62) or roll back the vid driver?

EDIT: Went back to the 77.77 = still no sound (barely audible in UT04)

EDIT: Updated audio to 4.62 = OK Sound back.
