NV 780 GTX buyers remorse from AMD 290X card

I don't think people that spend ludicrous money on GPUs have buyer's remorse. They can just continue to spend ludicrous money on whatever they want and it literally has no meaning or impact.

If there was a hypothetical $10,000 GTX795 HyperTiTurboBlabbityBlah and an $8,000 295XTXPE SuperSaiyanNachosNPeppers .. well, you'd still have a certain group of people buying them, because that's still not expensive to that crowd.

Anyway, someone with a 780GTX has a great card. The 290X is also mostly great, but the stock cooler is an abomination and I think that was a blunder. It should be easily fixable and mostly forgotten once the non-reference (or perhaps also a revised reference model!) come to be.

The value crowd is still running SLI 760s/etc or CF 7950/7970 and laughing with more performance and less $$ invested (not counting the SLI 780/CF 290X crowd, see above)

The hype is I can buy a card for $550 that matches the Titan and beats the GTX 780.

The first 780s for $625 are showing up on Newegg....I bet that is where they land, maybe a little less with a MIR.

Its not the same price though. Here in the states it is $100 more. But in Australia, where the OP is, its closer to $300 more.

Just because a retailer drops a price it doesn't mean nVidia has cut prices. So, has nVidia announced a price cut as far as you know?

GTX 780's are $800.

You should've had buyer's remorse from day 1.

Not that it changes the conclusion, but there's a few 780s at ~$720AU. Plenty at 800+ though.

I am curious about how someone mentioned the 290 can be flashed to the 290x. Is this true? If so, this could be one of the best free upgrades since 6950's were shader unlock able.

Also, do we know what is the difference between 290 and 290x? What would a bios flash change?

oh so you are smarter than all the AMD engineers put together. AMD has done their research and back the cards with warranty. the reviews put the quiet mode for the R9 290X card on par with Titan. the uber mode is faster if you want it. but at a noise tradeoff. out of the box this card embarasses the GTX 780 and is on par with GTX 780 OC for a 100 bucks lower price. the power difference is around 50 - 60w against a stock GTX 780. against GTX 780 OC the gap is lesser.

btw there are scores of GTX 480 users running their cards after 3+ years with 90 - 95 c temps. actually the GTX 480 is a beast of a card. at launch it looked bad because of early drivers (completely new scalable DX11 architecture) and lack of DX11 games. look at today's games like BF4, Crysis 3, Metro Last Light. the GTX 480 bulldozes (could not resist that) the HD 5870. :biggrin: 40% faster than HD 5870. Fermi is probably Nvidia's most forward looking architecture. :thumbsup:

The card cant even run at the originally advertised speed of 1ghz on "quiet" mode.

Yeah, if you've had the card for several months.

There are plenty of people who recently bought the 780 at higher prices. Especially if you're in Australia like OP is.

Same here im waiting for after market models too.just to add i will not be buying a windforce again,middle fan rattles at certain rpm :S.less fans less chance of this *shrugs*.

Those who have remorse are probably newbs to the graphics card scene and unaware of product release cycles and/or what each manufacturer may have in the pipeline.

Secondly, GPUs are the fastest depreciating components in PCs, and getting an expensive one to see it being matched or beat by last gens midrange cards is not too uncommon (660ti > gtx580, etc). So people are often aware of that and not usually bothered by remorse in fast changing products of this nature.

Thirdly, buying an expensive GPU just before the competition is about to release a product that will match or beat it at a lower price just means you didnt do your homework or pay attention to what was going on and therefore deserve to feel remorse.

There was no way to predict that AMD was going to release this 5 months ago.

I think "if" someone has buyers remorse they shouldn't have blown that much $ to begin with.

The 290 is the card that will probably be the cause of most buyers remorse though. I'm guessing 780 performance at $450 or so. So $200 straight down the drain after 5 months.

AMD advertises a boost speed of upto 1 Ghz depending on workload, temps, power / heat and chosen fan profile. it does not say it will run at 1 Ghz at all times. the R9 290X guaranteed boost is 850 - 900 mhz in quiet mode. similarly the GTX Titan is guaranteed to boost to 876 mhz and can also clock upto 992mhz depending on a lot of variables like temps, power etc. if you increase fan speed on Titan and keep it well cooled it will run at 992 mhz. lots of variables at play. remember the variable boost was brought by Kepler and now you are complaining. :whiste:

there is pretty much no situation in which the 780/Titan wont run at full boost. Most all of them can run oc'd to 1.1ghz or higher at stock voltage without hitting the stock temp or TDP cap.
