A calorie is the amount of energy it takes to heat one gram of water one degree C, right?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calorie

How come you don't burn calories just by eating a whole bunch of ice cream and drinking really really cold beer? Think about it. I think it'll be the new diet fad.

This has been sugested thousands of times. The fact is, the heat energy needed to heat up food is trivial when compare to the energy you burn daily. It takes less than 1 kcal to heat up a glass of cold water.
