I saw something about some people being fast oxidizers and others being slow oxidizers on one of the yahoo health blogs so I decided to look into it.

one link from google

Some of the sites I've found that talk about it seem to be a little unprofessional looking so I'm not sure if this is some nutty science or if it's true.

It seems to be true to me because I was looking for an answer as to why I was always hungry when I was eating healthy and trying to lose weight. I could go to subway and get a 12" turkey on wheat with no cheese or mayo, just vegetables and still be really hungry afterwards. Or, I could go by the chinese place and get a little bit of chicken and steamed rice and be full for hours. and be satifisied.

I see a lot of blah blah blah. Just more gimmicks. If you want to lose weight eat a healthy balanced diet and burn more calories than you take in each day. But don't have too large of a deficit b/c that isn't healthy either.
I do have a background in biochemical processes.

but the question still remains as to why some people can eat a lot of carbs and feel full but some people can eat all the carbs they can find and still not feel full?

Feeling full and not feeling full is a very subjective thing. According to that guy it may be due to a change in the weather, or your friend ate more paint than you did.

# Any sharp shift in the weather tends to further disturb one's metabolism in the direction it normally tends. Fast oxidizers go faster, and slow oxidizers go slower.
# Common pesticides, paints, and chemicals can disturb the energy producing abilities of tissues.

Actual scientific evidence can be found in reputable medical journals and the like.

It is a pretty simple concept.

There are multiple signals to make us feel hungry/full. One of those signals is how much blood sugar we have (actually maltose seems to be better than glucose at hunger satiation, but I'll ignore that difference and just call them sugar). Since there are multiple signals, what works for one person might not work for another person. Some people feel full when their stomach is full. Some people feel full when their blood sugar is high. Some people feel full when their hunger hormones are low or hunger satiation hormones are high. Etc.

Think of it as a team sport. On some teams, the fact that one player has a good/bad day has very little impact on the game result. For other teams, one player could make or break the team. It'll vary dramatically from team to team and sport to sport. What works for you, might not work for me.

When you eat simple sugars, you get a short spike in blood sugar. But then that blood sugar drops back to a low level. This drop is accompanied by a feeling of hunger. However, since there are other hunger factors, not all people feel hungry because of the drop in blood sugar. Other people are greatly affected and want to eat again.

Complex carbohydrates are slowly digested. Thus, the blood sugar is always slightly evalated as it is being digested (no peaks nor valleys associated with simple sugars). You never feel that sudden drop in blood sugar and thus don't feel that need to eat.

As another benefit, complex carbohydrates are often eaten along with fiber. Fiber makes the stomach feel full AND helps prevent food from being digested in the first place. Thus complex carbohydrates could be a triple benefit to weight loss.
