Nurses have been called heroes and front line defenders for a while now, but many hospitals treat them poorly.

I'm just gonna come right out and say it: This is because of corporate greed. By letting profit margins determine our quality of healthcare, we have millions of people who can't get their issues taken care of, even with insurance.
And most medical staff are not treated liked people, they're treated like tools.

For profit, or "non profit" for tax purposes.... who's #1 goal is to make as much money as possible is responsible for our health.... what could go wrong with that?

I'm all for capitalism ... but unregulated capitalism for everything is foolish.

Either way the US healthcare system is fucked. It WILL collapse at some point. I'm surprised it hasn't yet.

We have a good public health care system here in Canada, but low wages and poor workplaces persist in the system because the provincial governments that administer health aren’t a whole lot better than private employers. Wages is the area of cost that they have the most control over, so they are cheap, they overwork, they ignore systemic problems, they understaff, they contract out, and this does put patient safety at risk too.

Health care spending is really kicking societies butt across the developed world

In the UK too AFAIK, though I wonder whether this is a problem right across the board in employment and nurses get the thin edge of the wedge.

Nurses are treated a lot better in America than in the UK. The UK has socialist government-run hospitals. The vast majority of nurses are employed by the State.

Nursing shortages are a real problem. My wife's hospital (Stanford) is perpetually short staffed, she is always asked to take extra shifts.

Some of it is self created. SF bay area hospitals would not accept ASN degrees into their new grad programs until recently. There are several very good ASN programs at local community colleges that were sending there graduates out of state or to nursing homes (my wife had to go out of state to get some experience while doing online BSN program). Local hospitals have finally realized that nursing doesn't require a BS degree and have started accepting AS degree graduates, but they dug a huge hole they are now trying to get out of.

The nurses here in Denmark argue that since it is historically job done by women it is underpaid compared to other jobs requiring the same level of education, work hours and responsibilities.

This isn't limited to nurses; physicians, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, lab techs, nurses aids, Hell, dietary workers in the hospital. Administration aggressively abuses the altruism associated with health care careers. Cut cut cut, overwork, and if there's any push back whatsoever it's, "How selfish, we need to focus on the patients!"

Unfortunately, "hero" plaudits don't pay the bills or give you extra time with loved ones.

As a health care worker I never want to be called a hero, I'm not, this is my job. I want appropriate pay, reasonable responsibilities/autonomy, and support from administration.
