My wife and I have a baby due in November. We have decided the theme we want for the room. We want to do a semi-realistic cosmic theme. We don't like the cartoony space themes we have seen.

The problem is that my wife and I aren't artists. So my wife and I were thinking about picking some hubble photos as our inspiration and offering a local college student(painter/artist) around $500 to come over to the house and paint murals on our walls in the nursery.

Think I will have any luck on finding a college student willing to spend the time to do that? Is $500 a ridiculously low amount or high amount?

First off, HOW COOL!!! It will be great with planning and the right artist.

I would look in your area for an "arts" college first. If you do not have a specific arts college, go to a good university. Or call the art department and ask them if you could send a flier to them to put up.

How big is the room? How many hours do you think it would take this person to finish what you desire? That is what I would consider in the amount of payment.

Yeah we have some colleges around here that have pretty decent liberal arts programs. The room is only 10x12 so not a large room at all. The room has two large windows. So if I were to guess it is around 250sqft. I honestly have no idea how long it would take to do as it probably depends on what type of paint and sessions it might take. A lot would be empty space(i would paint the base coat as dark blue or something along those lines) with some small stars.

This may be too pricey and too much work, but if you want to go all out, star field ceilings are pretty sweet.

Cool ideas.

There is also things like http://www.cosmicrooms.com/index.shtml

I probably won't be touching the ceiling because it is a popcorn ceiling throughout my house.

I've never seen that before, also very cool.
I don't blame you for leaving the ceiling as is. I have that textured "popcorn" ceiling in my house too (though I have a basement with a drop ceiling ... which would be ideal for eventually putting a "starfield" in .... should I ever get around to building a theater. But my improvements will likely be all outdoor ones as budget allows.
