numlock on bootup isn't working

This is so simple it's embarrassing. I've set the BIOS to enable numlock on the numerical keypad. MB is an Asus P5K-E.

A few days ago it stopped working. I've checked the BIOS, it's still set for ON. When it boots up the numlock light on the keyboard lights up during the WinXP Pro splash screen. stays on for about 5 seconds, then all three lights, caplock, numlock and a light with a fat down arrow icon, light up briefly and then all three go dark. At the end of bootup the numlock key is off.

Can anyone explain this?
