So I *FINALLY* scored a victory with Sprint PCS and they are "allowing" me to leave (see back story in some MichaelD post about wireless services.)

So I hop over to intelenetwireless.com, pick out a Sony Ericsson T616 and fill out the web form for Cingular service. Of course I picked the "port my existing number" option. Order goes through and all told I'm paying $177 for a phone, car charger and leather case/belt-clip, and I'll get $100 back thru a rebate (yeah the Amazon deal was better but I missed out.) I did all this with 1 year contract too (2 years SUCK!)

The next day I get an email from letstalk.com (owner of intelenetwireless) saying there are issues with my number port request and I need to contact them. I call and they said Sprint "denied" the request because "they require verbal or written authorization" to release the number! I told the letstalk.com CSR that no one informed of this earlier, and she said [and I quote] "its bullsh*t--that's not a real policy".

Of course, now I'm fuming at Sprint, because they've already fvcked me raw, but somehow I manage to score the CSR Angel from Heaven (Jennifer #7772). She informs me that number portability is a 'work in progress' and that in order for it to work, all the information between the request form and my account has to match. ALL OF IT. EXACTLY. So if I forget my middle initial on the form and Sprint has it on file, request denied. Or, in my case, if the request form has my social security and Sprint doesn't have one on file, request denied!! So I had to speak to both CSRs and get all the information to match verbally (a phone in each ear, had each CSR read out exactly what they had, with all alphas in CAPS because its CASE SENSITIVE) and now they are resubmitting the port request. Something can still go wrong. Also, if they have to keep trying and too many port requests are submitted in a short period, Sprint places a LOCK on the account and port requests are denied for like A FULL WEEK!!!

This whole thing is fvcked up. They've had SEVEN YEARS TO PREPARE FOR THIS.

Tell me about it. I am a manager at a locally owned cell shop, and number portability has been the biggest headache I have ever had to deal with in all of my years of selling phones. What you have said is essentially correct. Information between the two accounts must match EXACTLY, or your request will enter into port limbo.

As a rule I tell all of my customers that it can take up to two weeks for the port to be completed, but it is usually done within just a few days. It has been my experience that T-Mobile has been the easiest company to port numbers to and from, while Nextel has been absolutely awful. I have had several Nextel ports that have taken upwards of 4 weeks to be completed. As you can imagine this makes for a very unhappy customer.

And god forbid if you should want to port your home telephone number to a cell phone. This usually takes upwards of 90 days, if all of the information was entered correctly.

how much did that number end up going for on ebay
eBay cancelled the auction. Verizon said that even with the new portability laws, the man does not "own" the number and should not be allowed to sell it. I think it was up to almost $90K when they pulled it.

My gf switched from Sprint to Verizon. She got her phone at Circuit City. They ported the number right there with no fuss. And 10 minutes later her SPrint number was working fine on Verizon.:)

I just bought a Motorola v400 from Brandsmart (Florida Electronics chain.) While the Brandsmart service totally sucked, the price was right. (Free After rebate w/ 1yr contract). I had Sprint prior and my contract with them has been up for about 5-6mo's now, I've just been waiting on the right phone/price.

So, They send me over to the check out area where they have one register to deal with the cellphone customers. There was a guy there trying to upgrade and having all kinds of problems... he ended up cancelling the whole transaction for whatever reason. I waited. And Waited. And Waited. Eventually the girl came over and took down my info and then I waited and waited some more.

Then she came back and started reviewing the info and turned out she farked up the number portability request. So she had to redo it. Well, now I'm already here for so long another bit isn't going to matter, but, still I'm ticked. Eventually, after 1hr, they finished. Said it could take 2-3days for the number to switch over, in the meantime inbound calls would go to my old # and outbound could be done on either.

To Cingular and Sprint's behalf, my new phone was working on the new number by the time I got home (about 1/2hr away).

Of course, I didn't know sprint canceled my existing phone that day, even thought I had paid through to the 24th already... bastards, wouldn't let me use it for outbound calls -- totally canceled w/o my personal authorization. I can understand why, but, it still sucks. They don't give you back your money either. At least I'm done with sprint. Now for some hassles with cingular I'm sure, but at least I have a cool new phone that only cost some of my time and a few bucks. My old phone and stuff is up for sale on ebay and I'm hoping it ends up as a wash.

CLIFFS NOTES: No probs w/ number portability.

Screw the link, I'll just cut and paste it in here:
Oh this is nothing compared to what they did to me. I've been eagerly awaiting the end of my Sprint contract, which occurred on January 14th. I've had them since 1996 and now with number portability I can finally jump ship, right? I've been eyeing deals on Bluetooth phones, specifically the Sony Ericsson T610/T616 (a GSM phone.)

Only problem is, GSM service is spotty in my area. T-Mobile for all intents and purposes just doesn't exist in the state of North Carolina (we're not an option on their website at least.) AT&T has horrible coverage with GSM (but they have been building fast and Charlotte now has EDGE.) Cingular has the best GSM coverage, but they I couldn't get the Amazon deal through them. Finally I found an Internet discount store practically giving the phone away for free if I signed a 1 year contract with Cingular.

Back to Sprint. Contract expired the 14th of January. I get a 'free' call from them 2 days later asking if I'm satisfied with service, blah blah blah. Now I figured I can bitch and whine (I've had plenty of reasons too) and brought up all the problems I've had with Sprint (refusals to replace phone under warranty, replacing phone with another defective phone, selling me a bad battery and not replacing it, etc. etc.) I ask for a phone credit for a free Sony Ericsson T608 (CDMA version of the phone I wanted, also has bluetooth and is only bluetooth phone for Sprint.)

First the CSR says she can't give a credit for that phone since its not available through regular channels (that's a whole other story...Sprint doesn't want you using it because its 'too good' in data mode.) Finally she says I can get a $70 credit but that hinges on me extending my contract. I said 'fine'. She makes a note on my account, and transfers me to the 'automotive sales dept.' who handles sales of the Sony phone .

Of course, the automotive sales CSR says there are no valid rebates on the Sony phone and that even the 18 month customer rebate does not apply to this particular phone. Also, I will have to change my plan because they do not allow folks with unlimited data plans to use this phone (again, the modem is 'too good'.) So the first CSR was wrong and this guy completely overrided her judgement.

And of course, Sprint RENEWED MY FVCKING CONTRACT AND WANTS TO CHARGE ME $150 TO FVCKING CANCEL!!! Basically, I extended my contract for another year when I wanted to switch, got no rebates, got no new phone, and I'm stuck on a plan that costs me $50/month.

I'm still not done bitching to their CSRs...

I went into a Verizon store. I said "I want to sign up and keep my old number that I used to have with AT&T. If you can't give me my old number I don't want to switch. " They did it right there in the store and 4 hours later my new Verizon phone rang with my old number. I don't see why it's such a headache.

I can't help sense this overwhelming hatred for Sprint. No one complains about any other Celluar Phone provider but Sprint. Are they really that bad? I have used them for two years, and have not had a problem with them (minus their dead zones, but since I barely call on my cell, and people barely call me on it, I don't care much.)

Given the present situation in this thread, is there anything else I should know about them, that would warrant a switch to another company?

I went from Cingular to SprintPCS. The change took about 24 hours to fully complete. But, I was informed it would take that long. The process was very painless for me. :)

Went from ATT to T-Mobile...switch took under 12 hours. When I activated I could make calls right away but not receive them, about 6 hours later my ATT phone got no service and T-Mobile was fully active :)
